I think the main reason the normal maps were so overdone was to disguise just how basic the models were.

And some textures look very new where before they looked old and distressed. The carved wooden door and the obelisk thingy for example. I might have a go at bashing them up a bit if I get a spare half hour or two.
One advantage of the old rubbish textures was that they left lots to the imagination.
The coffin is in the Hammerite section of the Old Quarter 3 map so I'd imagine they'd take more care so if you want to bash them up then I'd encourage you to do so! As for the imagination thing I had to use a lot in order to make up for the lack of detail. Besides, the T3_CEM textures (aside from the stairs) seem to be only used on the OldQuarter3 map.
