Hi.
I was able to install Catalyst 6.5, and the Rage 3d patch (Catalyst 7 doesn't work). However, now I have another problem. When I go in the Direct 3d tab for Catalyst CC in my display properties, there are no "W Fog", "Table fog", or "Z Fog" check boxes.

I also tried DDFIX, but that didn't work

Does ATI Tray Tools work with the new drivers?

Whats the exact full model number of your ati card, as I have a feeling its a cut down version - this would explain the lack of fog...

I usually edit the registry directly by now. This seems to have a slightly higher chance of success, and it works without having to install any of these tools.
To do so, click the "Start" button, then select the option to enter a command directly (I don't know how it's called in English). Enter "regedit" and press Enter. Now, you have to look for the right area where you have to perform some changes. Don't change anything else there unless you know what you're doing!
When using Windows XP, I usually find entries for an ATI Radeon card in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Video\{838359CE-535B-4A9C-ADF4-E9D3C8DB1613}\0000
although the latest number may as well be 0001, 0002 and so on. Usually, there's an entry called VSYNC in there, and one called DitherAlpha as well.
If your Radeon has two "heads" (meaning you can connect two monitors to it), you may find two branches in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Video\{838359CE-535B-4A9C-ADF4-E9D3C8DB1613}, e.g., 0000 and 0001. The right one should have the VSYNC and DitherAlpha entries inside. However, if you select the wrong one, it just means that nothing happens when you enable fog in Thief 2 later on.
You have to add three entries here. All of them are strings, not numbers.
Enter "WFogEnable" and set its value to "0".
Enter "ZFogEnable" and set its value to "1".
Enter "TableFogEnable" and set its value to "1".
Exit regedit and start Thief 2. Check whether fog is enabled in the video option menu. Select a fan mission with fog enabled (e.g., "Dwelling insanity"), or play mission 11 ("Life of the Party") of the original game. If you have fog now, enjoy!
If you did this and still see no fog, delete the three entries from the branch where you made them, and try the other one (if present). If that does not help either, curse ATI, Micro$oft, Thief and whatever you want - bad luck. I've had that happen a few times with XP and never found out what went wrong.
If anyone is trying to do the same stunt with Windows 98 SE, he/she has to look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ATI Technologies\Driver\000x\atidxhal instead. x is a number here, usually 0 or 1. Of course, there are two 000x branches again if you're using a dual-head graphics card.
If you have any card other than a Radeon, it is very unlikely that this will work.
I have used this Win98SE "fix" with a Radeon 9550, a Radeon 9250 and a Radeon 7500. The XP "fix" I used with the Radeon 9550 only, but I guess the other cards will work as well.
Good luck with Radeon: The foggy project!
EDIT: I have now had the appropriate entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{838359CE-535B-4A9C-ADF4-E9D3C8DB1613}\0000
instead of the branch with ControlSet002. This seems to be a neverending story...
Furthermore, when I tried to get fog working for a Radeon 9550 with Catalyst 7.5 (driver version 8.380.0.0), Windows XP and Rage3D Tweak 3.1e (old, but functional, and works with Windows 98 SE as well), I had to select the right settings (no W Fog, but Z Fog and Table Fog) first, press "OK", then select the exact opposites (W Fog on, Z Fog and Table Fog off), then the right ones again. Only then would Thief 2 display fog.
I plan to investigate this further, but this could take a few days...

Hi. The exact model for my video card is RADEON 7000 Series (0x5159). I tried the registry tweaks, but they didn't work
Yaldabaoth on 17/8/2009 at 07:46
Radlinker didn't work either
bikerdude on 17/8/2009 at 10:55
I think it might be time to upgrade as that is a rather ancient card..
Yaldabaoth on 18/8/2009 at 07:54
Yeah, I guess I'll have to do that.
Thanks for all the tips anyway
