I am not completely sure if it's the right key, but... Go to the place where Isabella was meant to be sacrificed. Follow the blood there to find a hole in the floor. Slide down to land in a basin filled with blood. You have company in the form of two stinking ladies' corpses that refuse to be dead. Make sure they don't bother you anymore, then search the basin's rim for a red or orange key. That should be the one, if I'm right.
Go back up somewhere in the room. You should eventually reach the sacrifice room again. Search for a large lever near a gate and pull the former in order to open the latter. You should be close to the area near the place where your key wants to be used. Do it the favour and get the treasures in the formerly locked room.

Found it, thanks!

I seem to be stuck because of the exploding barrel. I placed it right in front of the wall, but when it blows up nothing happens (except the banner on the opposite wall falling to pieces.) Is this a known bug? There were a couple of other smaller things I noticed that may be bugs. I could hear guards through walls and vice versa even though all doors and windows were closed. And there is either an invisible wall or an invisible fence on one of the outer balconies. I THINK this is a bug, because on the other side there is a visible fence that keeps the player from jumping on the roof, so I see no reason to intentionally use an invisible wall on this side. Should I re-install Thief 2 if all those issues are bugs or could this be an isolated problem with this FM?

I have had the same things happen with "Rowena's Curse", so it's most likely not your install.
The explosive barrel has to be placed very exactly at the right spot. My notes state that the barrel has to stand upright and as close as possible to the wall it is supposed to destroy. Select the spot carefully, save your game, and then try it. If you do not hit the spot exactly, the outcome is as you described.
There also are a few invisible barriers at roofs or near the balconies. It is possible that players now find them more easily, as the mission was originally made for "Old Dark", and the player can get to these hard-to-reach spots easier now that NewDark is around. Usually, though, these invisible barriers should not come into the player's way during gameplay, so if you hit such a barrier, just go back - there's usually nothing behind there which you should reach.

So I went back and tried to put the barrel
as close as possible. It didn't work. Then I tried to put it in the left and then the right corner. That also didn't work. After that I left a bit of space between the barrel and the wall. You guessed it, it didn't work. You know what did work? Dropping the barrel so it lands on it side and blowing it up like that. What a strange little bug.

The barrier I was talking about is not in a hard to reach area though. It's right there on the edge of the balcony. But you are right about it not being anything game-breaking. It's really just something I noticed that might also be a bug which is why I mentioned it.

@ Hilsaeffchen
Have you got a save, maybe we can improve the situation and add it to the dml.

I remember a barrier at the right edge of the balcony above the main entrance to the mansion. I would not be surprised if that's the one Hilfsaeffchen meant. I also remember there are more such barriers on the hedges connecting to the left edge of the same balcony, possibly erected there in order to prevent the player from reaching the mansion's roof and/or the cemetary. Unfortunately, we can't ask the late Lady Rowena about that any more. Thus, any changes there should be made with caution.

Future players surely wouldn't mind if the barrel behaved a bit nicer. I'll go through my saves and see if I can reproduce that bug.
Edit: Found a save and realized I was just extremely unlucky when I tried to
blow up the wall. This time approximately a third of the explosions opened the way forward. Didn't matter whether the barrel was upright or lying on its side. So yeah, not sure my save is of any use. Let me know if you still want it.

That's the one. So it is by design. Bit weird that she didn't put another fence there, but I'm sure she had a reason.

Ahh, yes!! Finally finished this mission on Expert, after all these years. I played it all those years ago on Easy, and Normal.. definitely a bit of a challenge on Expert though, without the sword.
Highlight that brought a tear to my eye was when I went to leave via the front gate and I bashed one of the last 2 guards at the exit on the noggin, and when I picked him up... there was my (last) name. I remember Lady R telling me that she had put a surprise in the game near the end for me. :(
Still one of my favorites. Great job!! :thumb:
You will always be remembered.

Wow! That's amazing. Stuff like that makes me cry.
