Pavis: Have you found an elevator that broke down once you tried to use it?
gamophyte: There's a clue in the director's office.
But if I'm to understand something correctly: You need the bright mushrooms to open a door? The bright mushrooms that EXPIRE and disappear, gone forever?
Also, that one of the FM's three secrets is on the island of the afterlife, which can't be returned to afterwards?
Pavis on 8/6/2025 at 09:52
Unkillable Cat: Yes, but there are at least 4 of them not far away, so you have plenty of time :)
I didn't found the broken elevator though... is it in the museum?
Edit: I found it a few minutes after I posted :) Sothird secret and third bonus objective, the torc.
Unkillable Cat: There is no secret on the island, each secret is for a bonus objective

Is this door
supposed to be unfrobable unless we place a bright mushroom in front of it? or is there something broken with my Thief installation ?

Broken elevator: It's not there, but it links to there. It's close to the Newgate gate itself.

No, I don't. They're all gone. Also the ones at the marketplace.
Because at no point was I even given a hint that I would need them for a specific purpose, so I just used them as a portable light source where I could. At no point (until much too late) did I realize that they're the only light source available to Garrett, even though flares are a thing in Thief 2, and at least two lanterns are in circulation (though unavailable to Garrett).
What this means, is that established gameplay mechanics are purposefully circumvented to force a singular, far-fetched solution to a specifically created problem for the player to solve.
In other words, overthinking. The whole time while playing this FM and seeing what Balboa was trying, I was concerned that something exactly like this would come up; a point-of-no-return that players had next to no chance of spotting until after the fact. In Balboa's eyes it probably seemed like a good idea on paper, but it's somewhat lacking in execution, especially since so many hurdles had to be put up to make it "work".
This isn't that big of a problem because it's an optional part of the FM, but if this was tied into one of the main objectives we'd all be crying bloody murder over it.
Same thing with that last secret regarding Sarnoth, it appears. At one point the FM literally Holds Everything to send Garrett on a sidequest to a new area that we can't return to later - where different, more streamlined gameplay rules apply and the loot don't matter... and Balboa expects us to keep an eye out for secrets? Kind of a mixed message being sent there.
These are minor blemishes on what is otherwise a spectacular Fan Mission, but they're blemishes nonetheless.

If a main objective were involved, there would have been a guaranteed way to reach it. But I see your point.

There are no secrets on the island, or hidden goals. Just a stat, similar to
Iron Beasts Destroyed.

There is a hint, nay spoiler, in the Museum Director's Office.

If the book, that's what I'm referring to already in my question. But I swear I tried by page left to right for order, then later by index number next to the artwork. Nothing is working. Am I on the right path with either of those?

Not the book. The essential clue
is in the Director's office. And you should have the ability to see it.

Oh of course I spam with it everywhere and didn't make the connection lol, thanks!
