A brute force approach is never the best solution (in my missions, at least). Check the outer hall more carefully.

Put the mask you find in the entry hall on the statue.
Then follow your new objectives.
1.
Return the two chalices that you have. 2.
Follow the caves down to Pandemonium. 3.
Enter and look to the left for a door. 4.
Enter the antechamber of the Lord of the Dead. You don't want to wake him. 5.
You need to find the Book of the Dead, and the Tree of Life. There is a garden to your left, and a throne room to your right. 6.
Don't forget to pick up the third chalice. And so on...
