I am trying to get back to the start.....after the museum I ended up in a basement with various bits of machinery....there are steps up to a room where a guard is, but there is a wooden cover stopping me from getting out.....what next?

If you're in the Museum I guess you already went through that, but you can get back to the Lady of the Woods if you want, (with difficulty on my part although can do it everytime now). :tsktsk:
I “
think” the only way to get to other places is via sewers. So when you're done with the Museum look for an entry into the sewer.
If you mean the wooden cover that is split in two, I don't know how (or if) you can get up there and I had to back track.

The wooden cover can be bashed with your sword. This room can be entered from two sides.

PaganZombie, if you're asking about the cave with a body, you can bash the barricade or torch arrow it. Be adviced that bashing wooden objects is going away for v1.1.
If you mean the small basement that you move some cabinets to reveal a small cave with a lamp, you can't go up the stairs.

I know, it's probably coming back for the next FMs of the campaign*, but this one was designed with torch arrows in mind and the sword / bashing was kinda breaking the design. Next up will have more systems. You can't crate stack on this one as well, and that will come back as well.
* as long as some custom scripting is made for me that allows for avoiding an ugly bug.
