Ooops ! Thank you for your answer ffox.
But, how are you suposed to know the items to put as "gift" on the alter ? I don't remember having read something about that but maybe I missed this clue too ;)

Pavis, the mission info file states this clearly. Although I have to admit that I sometimes don't read these files since I'm using FM-Selector instead of Darkloader. The latter displayed these files automatically when you selected a mission, while FM-Selector does not. Guess I'll have to remember that in the future...:p

I always forget now too until I hit a problem and then I remember to go and read the bugs list (if any). When I'm testing, I occasionally suggest putting the briefing or whatever in the announcement thread but I'm not consistent in that.
Note to testers: suggest putting it all in the announcement thread for the benefit of those of us who forget to read the Readme.

I forgot the golden rule : always read everything !
Excellent mission, I succeeded on normal and I will try hard mode.

There are little if any differences between normal and hard. The major differences are between expert and either of normal or hard difficulty.
Just like Lulu Lamer said in the Making of Thief 2 video, things make sense to the author because the author made them up but those thing don't make sense to the player. In Part 1 John asks Garrett to obtain the heart shaped box of chocolates and the diamond, so naturally they would be used somehow in Part 2. The two objects correspond to the sizes of the two collection plates on the altar, and there is a plaque on the altar instructing whoever has the gifts to place them on their respective collection plates. I guess I could have placed a scroll from John to Garrett to place the items on the altar.

To me, these things did make sense in this mission - but I played part 1 right before part 2, so I had this all fresh in mind. If, on the other hand, I stop playing one mission for any reason, then resume play months later, I frequently have trouble remembering what exactly Garrett is supposed to do.
I think there is no easy solution to all this. Maybe Garrett could have said something at an appropriate place in the mission (e.g., "Now I'll head for that wedding and deliver those gifts" in the beginning, or maybe "Ah - so that's where chocolates and the diamond go now" once the player reaches the altar - but on the other hand, that's not much of an improvement compared to the plaque there). Maybe Garrett could have a diary at the beginning (but some players have to be forced to read such things with a "Read your diary" objective anyway...). Maybe a briefing movie could have reminded the player of what Garrett is supposed to do (but then, making such a video may be a serious obstacle for some authors).
Sometimes, the Thief world is not perfect, I'm afraid.;)

It's OK. Every video game has things that need figuring out. :)

@Soldi: If you're talking about that icy thing, then there is something useful in that area.
How close nearby? I'm at the ice, at the wall in the beginning. The one to get into the compound, after the broken bridge. Hints are nice, but a clean spoiler would be nice, since I don't know what I'm looking for...

I actually prefer to have background, story, and game play information self-contained in the mission itself, with no external notes required, except for software notes, bugs, etc. In the case of the gifts, the items were in inventory, and it never occurred to me that it would be an issue.
In this case, one easy solution would have been to have the briefing that includes a remark to deliver gifts in a note that is in inventory at the beginning. I think it is clear enough as is, though.
