T2 Dreaded error message "closed program... send, don't send to Microsoft" - by Raj

Someone in the Metal Age hates me...
OK... SO... I used -lgntforce setup. I turned off the hyperthreading. I installed the CODECs. I didn't have to wait an hour for T2 to install. I read the FAQ. I searched the posts here.
And STILL... here's my problem.
Everything about the install seems to go swimmingly.
But when I try to start the game all I get is the window-sized picture with Garret on the right with his bow (with what looks like a fire arrow on his back) and a pyramid-shaped tower top on the left, with the whole picture centered on my desktop. I hope you all will know the picture I'm talking about. As I recall from my W98 days, it's the picture you get while Thief 2 installs the initial loading screen (or intro movie as the case may be). But after a probably less than a minute I get that little error message box that says "Thief 2: The Metal Age has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." "If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost." "Please tell Microsoft about this problem." and then at the bottom the two buttons "Send error report," "Don't Send." (I am again trusting that folks will recognize the error message I mean.)
I'm running XP Home SP3, with a 2 gig Intel Core2 Duo, on a Dell Inspiron 1520, with a Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, and SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.
What is going on here?!
Anyone else have or heard of this problem before?
Here's what it says when I click "To see what this error report contains, click here:
AppName: thief2.icd AppVer: 1.9.0.0 ModName: thief2.icd
ModVer: 1.9.0.0 Offset: 001ee854
If I click "To view technical information about the error report, click here, I get screenfuls of information I can't make heads nor tails of.
SO...
Such is my tale of lament and woe...
Can anyone help me make Thief Two go???:(
Thanks in advance!:thumb:

I don't have the .icd version of Thief2, someone who does, have any advice?
Raj on 2/10/2009 at 02:37
Hey mudi!
Thanks for replying and I can't believe that gobbeldee-gook I posted meant something!
So there is more than one version of T2 out there? Hey! Maybe that's a root worth pulling! Maybe all the suggestions and fixes I've been trying are for a different version than the one I have?
Maybe Santa's elves are real even if Santa isn't?
(Ok... getting a little punchy here...)
SO... Friends, Noble-men and Noble-women, human-folk one and all... what would you search on?
(does it show that I'm getting a little desperate? :erm:)

Are you changing the CPU to run THIEF on ONE CORE? You have a dual core CPU. Thief won't run with that.
There are a few threads with info on how to make the computer run THIEF on only one core of the chip.
I can't be specific as I don't yet run a multi-core chip (I will in the new system I am building but don't as yet).
Also you can try changing the compatibility when it is installed to run in W98 or 2K compatibility mode. Also if you are patching your TMA, then be certain you are using the EIDOS USA patch and not the Premier, which is for the UK and foriegn versions.
You can get the proper patches here:
(
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/)
Also Nvidia and GeForce cards often crash THIEF. So do a search for those cards. You might check the Makers site to see if there is a patch or, as has happened, may need to back down to an earlier driver for the Vcard.

Hi theBlackman!
I think I got the dual core thing covered. That's what I meant about turning of the hyperthreading. I've done it before, and especially to all the Thief games.
I'll check though, maybe I didn't do it right.
I'll try the patches you linked me to and keep posting about my results.
Apparently, TMA likes the W2000 compatibility better than the other modes so I'm going to try that next, after the patches.
Thanks for sticking with me!:thumb:

There are several versions of
Thief 2 out there, yes.
Some versions have a
thief2.exe file as well as a
thief2.icd file.
thief2.icd contains the "real" game while
thief2.exe is just a program that checks for the copy protection on your CD. While it tries to figure out whether you have an original
Thief 2 version or an illegal copy, it usually displays a picture. That's what happens in your case.
If
thief2.exe finds out the copy protection is still present on your disk, it assumes you have legally obtained your
Thief 2 game, loads the
.icd file and (somehow) starts it.
If
thief2.exe does
not find the copy protection on your CD, it assumes that you have stolen/pirated/illegaly obtained your game and tells you to install the "right"
Thief 2 game disk. It does
not crash when the wrong CD is in the drive, though.
My version of
Thief 2 is such an
.icd version, but apparently displays a different picture than your version does. There's a crude hand-drawn picture of a cloaked figure holding a bow, and some scribblings saying "Thief 2 Safe Disc test" (or something similar). It looks as if a child had drawn this picture. I never see any picture displaying something that could be identified as a fire arrow.
There are, however, other
Thief 2 versions, some of them without this
.icd file, apparently not checking for the copy protection. Furthermore, some
Thief 2 game disks install version 1.07 of
Thief 2 (mine, for example), which has to be patched to version 1.18 in order to play the majority of fan missions. Other versions install version 1.18 right away.
And then there are
Thief 2 versions in several different languages (e.g., german or english). A lot of combinations may exist in the real world.
The different versions sometimes need different patches (from 1.07 to 1.18) as well. The english patch does not work with the german version, and some patch versions will result in an "Insert the correct CD" message even if you
have the right one in your drive.
However, since I never had a problem with my
.icd version of
Thief 2 (until my CD was badly scratched, at least;)), I don't know what might have happened with your version. And I don't have a dual core CPU anywhere here either, so I can't even test anything.
Most fixes, however, should work with all versions of
Thief 2. And since the problem you encounter is reported in connection with
thief2.icd, it's likely that it is a problem with the
game, not with the
.exe program which just verifies whether you have the right CD in your drive or not.
However, if any of the fixes was directed at a file called
thief2.exe, then this may be the reason why that fix did not work: It would have to be directed at the
.icd file instead. Do you remember anything like that?

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem. Except I use XP Pro and do not have a dual/quad core CPU.
I just got my copy of T2 today (Never played T1 or 2, started on T3) So I was pretty bummed that it didn't work.
I've tried patching and manually installing the Ligos Intel Indeo Codec to no avail.
Also pretty sure I have the same version as Raj. Here's a screen shot of what the picture looks like.

After I patched it with the Premier patch it does get to the menu screen and plays the first cut scene but when I try to load the first mission it says: ERROR direct3d device does not accurately report texture memory usage. Contact your 3d accelerator vendor for updated drivers.

OK, this is progress, believe it or not. Check the Thief FAQ on this forum for solutions to that problem.
