Sure, but what then ?
The only way out appears to be to that small fenced-in area with 2 guards and the blocked gateway to the first part of the city (where I obviously should go). There's another way
by going through the attic.

Are we talking about the same house ?
Mine has no attic, you see the inside of the roof.
Two upper floor windows, one to the crate stack I came from, and one to the blocked gate area.thanks,
Cooper

@Agent Cooper: Look out over the blocked gate area, and look up.

thanks guys, that did it !
I had actually tried that direction many times before, pretty tough when you're always getting stuck in windows and other tight spaces, can't uncrouch or even move back or forth.
Somebody else said it best - the wonders of modern physics ... :erm:
On a positive note, interaction with the locals in the streets is quite entertaining. :ebil:
And a special :thumb: for the atmosphere !
thanks,
Cooper

With regret I have put this mission down for the moment as I'm just not enjoying it.
It's beautiful, it's visually stunning & the work that's gone into it is amazing.
But, you knew the 'but' was coming, it's just such hard work it's stopped being fun, tbh it stopped being fun after the first 20 minutes or so but the story and visuals kept me playing for a good 6 hours or more.
The author has a story to tell, and it's an excellent story, but they want to tell in a very precise linear way. Whereas thief is more of a "search the map finding bits of the story, not necessarily in any order and put it together in your head as you go" game. So it's heavily scripted to force the required linearity. This scripting is also used to create problems. For example some objects you need, don't even frob until after you discover you need an object, but you don't know which object you need. Most thief players will search an area and if they don't find anything they won't go back to it. This mechanic forces the player to go back to previously searched areas and repeat the search they did before, usually after navigating a highly dangerous area. So you wind up searching the entire map again for one object that didn't react the first time you looked at it. Having to do this once I could deal with but having to do this again & again, sometimes with the addition of extra hazards which spawn in behind you are sucking the fun out of the game.
So I'm going to put this down for the moment & try it again later.

I have to agree. The mission has so much potential. I kept struggling through the first mission and ended up following the walkthrough step by step. Inch by inch. Now at the second mission I am stuck at the very start. The thread not being enough help I am reluctantly giving up for now.

It wasn't so much the difficulty, it was more the repetition, I got all the way into the library & realised I then needed to work my way back across territory I'd already covered, again, then I'd have to work my way back through the same territory to the library.
This was just for one item on a list and going off prior experience in the level the other items would most likely need similar map traversal.
The difficulty I could deal with, the forced repetition just sucked the joy out of it.
As I said though it's an absolutely beautiful mission & there's a brilliant story being told
One thing I noticed about the female guard captain, when she went to the loo I BJ'd her and she just stood there for 10 seconds before collapsing, which indicates the script is taking priority over KO events, I think she needs to be on the next priority down.

Or worse... the ai runs into the middle of a crowded place and collapses. :ebil:
