T2 Campaign - Keeper of Infinity 2: Mission 1 - Bad Venture (6 Jan 2016) - by Soul Tear

I have a huge problem replaying this mission Bad Venture.
Jonas speaks to me, but I didn't get the English translation of what he wants me to do, the fat man at the stairs at the Tumbled Inn highlights but he doesn't speak to me. The blue sphere is not at the house of science and I didn't find the spider to put inro the empty jar. When I get back to Jonas's secret spot, he's gone.
I played the mission several times, but just now I have these problems. Anyone knows what it could be?
Thanks in advance.
P.S.: I looked at the walkthrough video's 1 and 2 on page 1 of this thread, and I did all of that already .......

One explanation for these problems could be that the scripts used for the mission did not work for you this time. The subtitles displayed when Jonas, the fat merchant, and other people speak in this mission are realized with custom scripts. Most likely, these scripts are also used to let the mission progress in order. This would probably explain why Jonas is suddenly gone from his hideout before you have completed the objectives with the sphere above the rear entrance of the House of Science(s).
By the way, if you play this mission on easiest difficulty level, the fat merchant near the stairs most likely will not speak what he would usually speak, but say the line of the female portier instead, stating that all rooms are occupied. I think you can even hear him speak with the female's voice. This appears to be a little bug without any consequences. The fat merchant's sub-quest is simply not available on that difficulty, and he babbles some nonsense then. Just don't heed his words in that case.
If you have an early savegame where you can proceed to anyone (e.g., Jonas, fat merchant, female portier at the bar of the "Stumbled Traveler Inn", ...) whose dialogue lines are subtitled, load this game once more and see whether the subtitles do appear or not. If they don't appear, the malfunctioning of the scripts is already saved in the savegame.
The scripts inside v1.6 of the campaign (which is the newest version published in English) are partially outdated, but so far, I could not trace back any of the missions' problems to that.
Unfortunately, all of this could very well mean that you have to restart the mission from the beginning in order to get the scripts working again.:erg:

Baeuchlein, would this really help me getting through this mission again? Right as the settings are now, because I overwrote all earlier saves.
Thank you for your answer. Hope you can help me again with this one.
Should I restart again?

The problem is: At the moment, I cannot be sure whether this may help. But we may be able to get some quick answers before you play it again.
If the last mission you played is "Bad Venture", look for a file called "Thief2.log" in your Thief 2 game directory. If you find it, open it (for example, with a text editor, like Windows' Notepad). Go to the last lines. From these last lines, search the file from the end to the beginning for the following lines:
: Loaded script module "GenBegin.osm" [FileModDate=2000-Mar-27]
: Loaded script module "NVBegin.osm" [FileVer=1.2.3.0 ; ProductVer=1.0.0.0 ; FileModDate=2012-Aug-26]
: Loaded script module "lgsbegin.osm" [FileVer=1.0.0.52 ; ProductVer=1.0.0.52 ; FileModDate=2011-May-24]
: Loaded script module "tnhbegin.osm" [FileVer=2.1.0.0 ; ProductVer=2.1.0.0 ; FileModDate=2009-Apr-10]
: Loaded script module "convict.osm" [FileModDate=2000-Mar-27]The lines should be somewhere near the end of "Thief2.log". If the file is there, and if the last mission you played was "Bad Venture" from the "Keeper of Infinity2 v1.6" campaign, but the lines are not all there, this already shows that not all required scripts were loaded when you last played the mission. A restart of the whole mission then is the only way which
might help. Proceed to the section below which begins with "If you restart the whole mission again ..." (in bold letters).
If the file "Thief2.log" is not there, or if the last mission you played was not "Bad Venture", start "Thief 2". Load a savegame from the playthrough of the mission which had the problems you described, then exit the game again. Look for "Thief2.log" again and look for the lines shown above. If "Thief2.log" is not there, then the game does not create a log file for some reason, and our try to get quick answers failed. You can only start the mission again and hope that it will load the scripts this time.
If, however, "Thief2.log"
is present in your Thief 2 game directory/folder, and it contains the lines shown above, then the scripts seem to have loaded correctly. Continue playing the mission; the chances are good that it will work, then.
If "Thief2.log"
is present, but it does
not contain all four lines shown above in the same spot near the end, then some of the scripts apparently do not load. In that case we would have to find out the reason for why they don't load.
If you restart the whole mission again, save your game immediately after beginning, then exit "Thief 2". Look for "Thief2.log" in the game directory/folder again, and look for the lines shown above, near the end. If any of these lines is missing, the game does not load all the scripts, and we have to find out why. If, however, all the lines are there, continue playing. Chances are good that the mission will work, then.
Let's see whether that gives us answers even before you play through the whole "Bad Venture" mission again.

I preferred the ambience music of V 1.2 and I miss some small details. Like the tree trunk in the grill of the canal at the beginning that let you enter with a rope arrow... Sadly it got removed... :( Why? :tsktsk:
baeuchlein on 26/12/2022 at 06:42
AFAIK, the tree trunk entryway was present in the single-mission version of "Bad Venture", but never in the campaign version. Probably because the mission was changed in some way and the ability to enter the city via that route could come in conflict with some of these changes.

Unfortunately this had to be removed because some complained that it was too difficult to shoot a log with a bow, apparently these guys always skipped training in TDP.
As for the ambient, yes it's a good ambient, it's restored in Reloaded.

Restore! Restore! Restore! :joke:
Yes the jump is difficult, but what's wrong with difficult?! If it's too difficult, don't use it
I love the idea of the option for alternative entries!

The alternative route into the city, which is the only one remaining in the campaign version, was/is also difficult, so "removing if too difficult" is more difficult to do than one might expect. For me, shooting the arrow into the log in a way that it could actually be used was also not easy in the single-mission version, and I did TDP Keeper training several times.
It is sometimes really difficult to say what is too difficult.

In any case, archery requires more effort than rifle shooting with a scope. Another thing is that in a not very big mission to create too many obstacles is a bad form.
