"Good thing that it's a private cell phone company and not a SOCIALIZED GOVERNMENT PHONE SERVICE or you'd be really fucked."

Sooner or later this will be considered normal, and that will be a good thing. I'm not sure if it's the right time yet, though.

As long as all bills are available in another format (i.e. online) then this isn't too much of a problem for most of the civilised world.

I would have thought that it's quite normal these days, at least here in Finland some operators have charged a little extra for paper bills for a couple of years now. It's the same with bank statements etc.
And when you think about it, it makes perfect sense actually. I don't need to see every phone bill that I get on paper when I can read it on my computer as well. There are so many useless paper forms that going digital is the only way. Besides, that also makes things much easier. Of course there are people who don't have computers, but I can understand these teleoperators' decision.

People still use T-mobile?
Anyway, good thing I'm already leaving T-mobile. Their coverage sucks, half the time I can't get any signal.

I'm slightly annoyed by this, but not overmuch. An extra buck on my phone bill won't kill me, and I'm one of the crazy people that likes to keep paper records of pretty much everything that I spend money on. And printing the on-line statement out would use twice as much paper as the statements they mail me (if they REALLY wanted to cut down on costs, they could maybe stop including all the advertising crap that they include in my statement. I'm already using your service, people, I don't need to be advertised to about it).
Where do you live, again, Toad? My T-mobile coverage is practically flawless, and I don't live in a major urban center.

Yeah, I'm just like you Fafhrd. Online bills are a little nebulous - I like to have paper records that go into the paper archive, and wtf is with the leaflets and crap they send with your bill. Orange send me stuff about BB (which we already have) and upgrades but I can't upgrade, I'm not eligible for it yet. Such a waste.

Appalachian foothills. My coverage is good in some areas, but when I have to drive it will consistently cut out every few miles, while my friends using Verizon or AT&T will be able to continue chattering without interruption.
As for online bills: I like to print my online bills for archival. Cuts out on the security risk of a bill, often with sensitive information printed on it, going through the mail system.

... And people who know me wonder why I refuse to get a cell phone...
I'm right there with you on that one. I haven't had a cellphone since 2003 due to the ridiculous nature of some the fees and the fact that I hate the notion of being able to be reached anywhere 24-hours a day; and am about to get rid of my home phone line, now, as all I get are calls from some bitch in Utah who says she's from "Chaaze" (can't quite say "Chase") three times a day.
The number, btw, is 801-823-2021...just in case anyone else wants to fuck with them as I have been trying to do, look 'em up.
