Holy smokes, I now have System Shock running on my PC! For the first time since I had Windows 95! And I didn't have to do anything! Kolya, I think you may have just made a good bulk of the FAQ completely unnecessary (for lazy people).
Now to contort my mind and fingers to the wonky, uneditable control scheme...

Is there a 64-bit Windows compatible version available? :cheeky: (Mostly a joke, as I've been seeing that error pop up far too often in regard to games that have no chance of getting one.)
All kidding aside, it (surprisingly) works perfectly in DosBox. Have to speed it up a little, but otherwise, this is wonderful.

I have come to like the controls actually - or maybe I just got used to it. :)

I hate you Kolya ;)
It runs really unstable on my other computer. Once I got a popup of the cmd-graphics properties (how many lines and colums etc..), I get graphics errors (sometimes), often hangups (only of SS) that can sometimes be solved by repeatedly giving/taking focus to it, sometimes it crashes. Often I get "stuck" keys (doing pirouettes, running full tilt, etc), and in rare cases I get bluescreens that reboot Windows before I can read anything. - But I'm stuck on Level3, I forgot where I put those modules...
I'll have to try dosbox, that might work better. Yes, also my second computer is a laptop. But I don't have a desktop here.
And I'll try XGA and French when I get the download.
Thank you Kolya!

Ironically, when I tried it in DOSBox last night it skipped the intro movie and crashed when trying to get into game mode. Could someone (not necessarily in this thread) post any tweaks they made to the default DOSBox settings to get it to run?

Doesn't work for me in DOSBox either. :(
I have XPx64 but I don't think it's a problem, since other DOS games run pretty well in DOSBox.
It loads cdshock.exe and boom, black screen (window, if I'm running DB with convenient DosShell for Windows which doesn't support fullscreen mode for DB. Mounting C: all the time is annoying).

Nope, Dosbox isn't working here. But
I hope Kolya's Win98 installation problems are all connected with his new System Shock on a Minix-USB-Stick-project  plug-and-play.

Getting my second computer to run has more to do with backup issues.
I just looked up what Minix actually is... Sounds interesting.
Though I would probably go for a minimalist linux os then. There are lots of these I just noticed. ((

Hallo Landsmann. ;)
Sorry, no idea what's causing this problem. Possibly driver issues but I really don't know.
BUT: After reading a bit through the SS1 sticky I found out something that might be interesting for other people who had problems getting this version to work: It seems that SYSTEMSHOCK-Portable will only run in an Administrator Account.
Otherwise it crashes to desktop when hitting the "Start" button for me.
I will investigate that further as it might be related to high resolutions only. Not sure yet.
EDIT: In fact it's not related to high res packs. Means: You need an Administrator Account to run SYSTEMSHOCK-Portable.
