The 0.4 version is a good usability improvement. The batchfile (which really should be renamed to "System Shock.bat" or something suitable) seems to behave better for shortcuts than the PIF did, which had odd problems with relative paths. I also agree that 640x480 is the best choice, as not only does it make the interface text fit better but it also makes the mouse behave halfway usable in the 320x200 menus.
What rationale is there for including dosdrv.exe? Without the VDMLoader.dll I don't think it actually works anyway (I don't have VDMSound installed), and the game works just fine for me when I comment it out of the batchfile.

So I could put in a generic named save game ("Hacker v0.1") but that means the intro doesn't start automatically anymore. And people would have to continue an existing save game which would lead to some irritation I guess.
Two words: 'difficulty settings'.
You don't get to choose them if you start a saved game.
4x4 possibilites = 16; more than the number of save slots.

It'd be a bit more than that. More like around 256 or so possible combinations.

Yah. 4^4, not 4*4.

I'll check that about dosdrv.exe, thanks Vigil.
Actually two save games would probably be sufficient. We'd have save game no. 1: "All options to the right!" and no.2: "Mission" and "Cyber" at 2 (No time limits.) Did anyone ever actually play with weaker enemies or less difficult puzzles? (pussies!)
Anyway, it was only an idea I had in the beginning but save games are no way to go imo for other reasons outlined above.

Oops, of course I mean 4^4.

I need help. Just downloaded 0.4 and it works. Although I don't see the intro (black screen) and I got com1 & 2, I could "play" (with the jumpy mouse). But when I try to switch to VGA resolution, I get a black screen, that sticks rather persistently to my monitor. I have to kill the program...
Yes, I know the graphics board is not the best: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP. But still, what can I do?
PS: great that you do this, Kolya!

Same situation here. Using one of those horrible Intel graphics controllers. Eventually, my graphics drivers crash and I'm dropped to 640x480 and 256 colours until reboot.

Admirable work Kolya !
It works like a charm on my rig without any error, I even have audio logs playing (which I did'nt manage to get working with my original french CD of System Shock)
Only one problem : switching language during game makes it crash, so I play in english (not so bad, even if french translation is one of the most well done)
Just for compatibility info here's my rig :
Athlon 64 3500+, 1Go DDR, ATi 9800XT 256mo (with CCC 6.5), using Mobo Asus A8V's integrated audio chipset, WinXP pro SP2, USB mouse & keyboard

Tungsten and Drat: I only have a few ideas to throw at you: Did you try using other resolutions but VGA? Either 640x400 or one of the ResPacks?
If none works you can at least get rid of the jumpy mouse by changing the resolution in "!START.BAT" to "320 200". Because that's that's the resolution you start with and if it works for you there's no point in telling MOUSE2KV you had anything else.
Skizomeuh: Take your time to read (
