I have no idea what would stop the music from playing all of a sudden, apart from soundcard/driver issues. Another application "hijacking" XMI files wouldn't keep System Shock from playing them.
Since you are using the latest SS-P version 0.8d now anyway...Have you tried installing VDMS?
I've tried both with and without VDMS, no difference. I'm trying to figure out what it might be... the odd thing is that it's just the music. All the other sound is A-OK.

Don't be sorry dear, you helped us all to sterererero sound effects! :D
I should be sorry for being so unwilling in the beginning... But it all turned out well in the end.
Still, you were worried that the next thing that would happen would be sound issues popping up all over the place, which seemed like it was already starting, though now I'm not so sure what it might be.

Just thought I'd check and ask, how big is your SOUND folder? It's in SS-P's Res folder. My folder's 832/988 kb, (size and size on disk sizes) if yours isn't something might've gotten deleted, but that probably isn't it considering this wasn't fixed by the updates. If that's not the size of your folder, just holler and I'll get my FTP program working again and upload an archive of mine for you. :)

Well the SFX are samples while the music is MIDI. Try this:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Sounds and Multimedia.
3. Click the Audio tab.
4. In the drop-down box, select the Midi device.
It should be: Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. Additionally check the volume on the button below.

Fixed! It seems that unmuting Line In for the Wavetable thing did the trick, although I have absolutely no idea why.
Tomorrow I'm going to show the game to my computer programming teacher, he's curious to know more about SSP.

Glad this worked out for you. :)

in case someone cares (I really doubt that, but anyway),tried SSP on a win9x machine.the launcher doesnt work (launches a dos window with all the options, but it flickers madly and needs to be terminated via task manager),but manually extracting the appropriate resolution package to the RES folder and running vesa.exe did the trick and the game launched normally just like under xp..music seems to be a bit jumpy though (ugly screeching sound in the menu, goes away as soon as you get in the game),but no big deal.getting vdmsound for win9x would probably fix it,but no plan to test it unless requested.
still way better that the standard messing-with-memorysize-settings/config+autoexec-editing/locking-up-after-exit stuff I had with the standard cd version..

That would be the music, right? I like most of the music in the game, but that menu music, ugh.

Heh, then that would mean the music's working fine.
voodoo47 on 12/10/2007 at 06:12
the banshee howl is not present when running SPP under xp (no vdmsound installed either).
TheNightTerror on 12/10/2007 at 10:18
It sounds about right the music would be different without VDMS sound, I don't know anyone who'd really enjoy the main menu music in all its glory. A perfect example of how you get the worst music over with at the beginning of the game . . . I usually mute the sound as fast as possible if I'm about to be kicked back there. Nothing worse than going from Reactor or Security level music straight to the menu . . .
Still cracks me up that my cat's so scared of it, played it for her again (severely overtired and rambling and easily amused tonight) and scared the living shit out of her, she growled at the laptop when she realized that's where the sound was coming from this time, after she hunted around with her fur standing on end. Menu music on laptop speakers, urg.
