I think I worked it out, after fiddling a little. I do have VDMSound installed in c:\Program Files and I checked that VDMSPath is set to that directory. It seems that the IF is a bit iffy about the space in the path. I copied dosdrv to c:\pit and SET VDMSPath=c:\pit and it was detected fine. Should be easy enough to re-install it to a different directory.
Oh, and thanks muchly Kolya :D for portable SS1 goodness.

Ah! Didn't think of that, I'll see if I can reproduce this and fix it with quotes around the path.

Testing confirmed that pathes should be in quotes. Sorry for that, in my winXP edition the "Program Files" folder is called "Programme", so I didn't notice the problem.
Additionally to a fixed version, there's a patch available now that will update you from version 0.8 or 0.8b to the latest 0.8c. Place it in your SHOCK folder and let it extract there. [(

There's another update that fixes the com port error, (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117157) thanks to Squatina. The latest version of SS-P now is 0.8d.
I've updated the patch as well, so if you downloaded any previous version in the 0.8 series, you only need that patch.

Hi, I've got a strange bug. I played this a few weeks ago and everything was fine. Now I play the game, and there's no music. None at all. I downloaded the latest version, and it fixed my COM port error, but still no music. Any help?
TheNightTerror on 26/9/2007 at 11:07
Portable was recently altered to make it compatible with VDMS sound, this could be what broke the sound for you. The newest version should detect whether you have VDMS sound installed and act accordingly; do you get any messages about whether it was detected? What color is the window that opens when you run VDMS sound, green, red, or gray?
And Kolya, I'm so sorry. :o
catbarf on 26/9/2007 at 11:39
It's green- but the point is that the music just suddenly stopped working with the older version, which I know for a fact had worked before.

Catbarf, it sounds like some change to the system stopped it possibly. Maybe a soundcard driver update? You see, there wasn't anything you could change about the sound with the older versions (up to 0.7). Apart from the in game volume slider.

Don't be sorry dear, you helped us all to sterererero sound effects! :D
I should be sorry for being so unwilling in the beginning... But it all turned out well in the end.

The only thing I've updated is my graphics driver, so I have no idea. I'll roll back and see if that works.
Edit: Nope, still no music. I'll do some experimentation.
Edit 2: Son of a
BITCH, the damn thing just uninstalled my audio drivers when I clicked 'modify'. Time to go for system restore.
Edit 3: Woohoo, the restore worked. No music still, however. I found that I have actually never updated my audio drivers, so that isn't the problem.
Edit 4: I have done some testing, and it seems that only the music doesn't work. Perhaps it's the file format? They're the only files in XMI format. I'm wondering if perhaps another program is stepping in and trying to run it.
Kolya on 26/9/2007 at 20:48
I have no idea what would stop the music from playing all of a sudden, apart from soundcard/driver issues. Another application "hijacking" XMI files wouldn't keep System Shock from playing them.
Since you are using the latest SS-P version 0.8d now anyway...Have you tried installing VDMS?
