Thank you Kolya! You just saved me a pretty decent sized chunk of my computers' hard drives. :D Downloading now, I'll check it out after I finish my current game.

Looks like you still have a bit of a problem Kolya. :o I crashed twice while trying to run the game with Mouse2KV and the 1024x768 resolution patch. I got a bit suspicious, and simply tried to run CDSHOCK.exe with VDMS sound, so it wouldn't keep closing the window before I could see the error. It looks like the .cfg file isn't being properly renamed before the game tries to load. There's no cyb.cfg in the folder, but a cyb.cfg~default and cyb.cfg~VDMS, so they must not have been renamed properly. If I knew anything about .bat files I'd take a peek and see if I could help out with that end of things.
To save you a little time I quickly renamed VDMS's cfg so that SS1 would detect it, and she started up with gorgeous sound and running liquid smooth! :thumb: I double checked that it runs properly with the portable shortcut, and it does. Looks like you just have to fix that one thing and she should be good to go!

I had the same not starting due to not finding a CYB.CFG. Also, its seems I both have VDMSound installed, and don't have it installed at the same time. I guess I should be able to get into Marvins room ;)
Oh, and installing Service Pack 2 got rid of the NTVDM errors I had before, if that's any help to anyone.

I have SP2 installed, it was streamlined with the XP disk I put together so I could take my laptop back from Vista's death grip. It definitely didn't do me any good, I have XP Pro.

I made a mistake but it shouldn't cause problems if VDMS was detected...
You see the CYB.CFG gets copied by mouse.exe, respectively vesa.exe. These are actually batch files again, you can look up the sources in SHOCK/RES/SSPsrc.
I simply forgot to copy the CYB.CFG in case VDMS was not detected. That's what you get for working overnight. But since TNT seems to have VDMS there should have been no problem. And what is that about having VDMS and not having it at the same time?
The check works by testing if dosdrv.exe (VDMS) exists in the global path that is set by VDMS after installation and rebooting.

Uploading the bugfix (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=211.0) version 0.8b just finished. I tested it quite thoroughly, that is with and without VDMS installed, in DGVESA and Mouse2kv mode, and in several resolution modes. If you do the math that's a dozen possible setups (with languages it's 36) and it's entirely possible that some bug slipped by. But have some faith, and if you do find a problem, please report.
One thing I noticed about NTVDM.exe (the MS winXP dos environment): NTVDM.exe may sometimes crash for no particular reason...
It's not regular but there are ways to provoke it:
- Quickly escaping the game's startup screens before the intro video
- Quickly starting and quitting the game several times in a row

Just wanted to say thanks for the portable version. I just finished playing it as a precursor to ss2 and I dunno what the hell you did to the game but it no longer plays super fast during the final battle with shodan in CS. I was very very surprised when I actually beat her legitimately, which was a perfect way for me to conclude the session and I got to see the ending cutscene. Not that I haven't seen it before but its been a long long time.

I'm not sure what was going on, but running ssp.exe I get the first page, press any key, and then a second page with both messages VDMSound has been detected and VDNSound hasn't been detected. On a red background, I think. I checked out the bat files, altered vesa.bat by removing the conditions, and renamed the VDMSound cyb.cfg, and it works fine and dandy now. Sounds different (read generally better) than on my old dos pc, I'm curious about what the different settings is.
I'll try 0.8b and fiddle around, see what happens. Or I'll get distracted, and just play the game :p

That's interesting and odd. I took the IF condition from (
http://www.computerhope.com/if.htm) here. If you can be bothered try and see if you can get an IF condition working.
I'd really like to know what's going on there... I guess you have VDMS installed?

I can't help with what's going wrong, but the sound settings are General MIDI for music, and Soundblaster 16 for digital sound, or should be at least. That's what they are on my standard installation at least. I'm going to check out version 0.8b, it turns out I didn't actually grab it earlier, and see if it does anything strange on my system.
