Oh yeah, that's been noted. We had a little fight with a certain wikipedian iirc about whether this was to be taken as a reference (citation needed) when ZB put it into the SS2 article on Wikipedia. Because, you know 1138 could mean anything!

Well 1x1x3x8=24 and 2+4=6 6 is 2 divided by 3. 23 man! 23! It's freaking EVERYWHERE!

There's no gravity in space. In addition to that, reinforcing the front of any space craft is a good thing because of debris.

Sadly I did watch what poor Jim Carrey was forced to act through. Well sorta forced, regardless I blame the director. Joel Schumacher! DAMN YOU!
I knew of the 23 thing a while before the movie though. Also definitely going to look into the other 23 movie, it looks really interesting, Illuminatus! is something that has been catching my eye at work a lot so I might check it out during breaks (I work in a bookstore).

I believe he meant 'heavy' in a visual, aesthetical way (not physical weight - although the point about debris stays) - I also thought that the front takes a bit over (visually) and reminded me of Event Horizon.
But then again I thought: That adds (and strenghens) the horror aspect and makes it darker.

Indeed that's what I meant. I challenge you for an honourable BaboViolent match Heme.. This insult must be avenged!
As for the reinforced front protection... That's a nice explanation for something that looks wrong. And surely not being perforated by debris is more important than looks, right?
No! It's not. Because no one will ever fly this ship. As a fictitious starship it has to follow different principles than a real spaceship would have to (granted there was such a thing like an FTL drive). Take a look at that starship comparison chart. How many of these ships have an obvious reinforced front? How many
look like their nose was heavier than their drive mechanism?
That's because no normal thinking person cares about space debris in a movie and how it might affect the ship flying by. It's just not important, no matter what the geeks may say. A disproportionate ship on the other hand will look wrong to everyone.

Heh looks like a dildo! :joke:
Personally I think it's ok, but could be better. It looks kinda sluggish like a stone. I mean the original Von Braun had this cool wing like thing in the back that made it stand out more, and I really think so as well that the engine is where home is. Meaning more mass on the back.
Bottom line, >I< would like it a bit more... how do you say it... curved or something that makes it look like it has more shape.
I'm really gonna tip my hat for you if you really pull this one off btw haha :thumb:
Madness!

I was having a play with arc's and came up with this side profile of a concept,
I'm working on a few other views, front, back etc. of this idea too, which i'll post up once they are finished.
In this drawing, the front is on the right hand side of the page, not sure how Von Braun-ish it is, was thinking more about technologies when I was drawing iit
Some details of the design.
• Massive back section with 6 thruster outlets and engine bits galore
• The iconic Von Braun 'control tower' designed to match this form
• The big hole in the middle in the 'warp chamber', rather than a big module I though it may be cool to have a really big hole for it to build up in, kinda like that big machine in the Jodie Foster film 'Contact' but without all the spinny bits.
• The 3 matching small circular things are basicly like an eye, able to rotate around a socket with a super-laser in the center.
• Smooth and elongated outer shell, with a cluster of more industrial 'working' parts.
• Small hangar and an array of escape pod's just above the super-lasers.
• Secondary bridge, or possibly a navagation area at the front.

What is their use?
Not that I don't like this new design, but it departs too much from the original VB in my opinion. It almost looks like a
Von Braun-class vessel from later in the future, same as the difference between
Enterprise-E and the original
Enterprise, if you like.
The ship's shape reminds me of Douglas Adams'
Starship Titanic.
