One thing I don't get, I will totally watch this film if you get it done, but why not just make Von Braun look like... well... Von Braun? I mean there's an excellent reference picture in strangebedfellows and more than enough pics from the game itself to make it look like an exact duplicate.

Ya, the drawing of the von braun isn't bad, but you should keep the original concept its more real... more human. Maybe you should take the old concept and modify it from there. The new one looks like it came from an alien technology. By the way nice drawing!

I see what your all saying, very good points made by all:thumb: .
Simply, it might be acceptable to say, the back story, and the original Von Braun are kind of like 'rules', since this is a design project for a film production, if I simply took those rules and designed to the letter, well, I'm sure I would end up with the Von Braun. (In which case there would be no point to designing it).
While this serves to get a great result for you guys, a select 'niche market' if I can call you that :D :D , in design for film that could be a really bad thing in terms of possible revenue, which I have to concider.
Compared to some starship design today (and im talking about my film theoreticaly being released in the year 2011 etc.), the Von Braun's overall shape is familiar when compared to 'market competitors' of this era and has a 'been done' feel about it.
For a ship of its general discription, exploratory, experimantal, last hope, pride of the fleet type starship I feel personally it should be a bit more 'epic' visually, but not over the top.
Which is where design come into play, pushing those rules far beyond what they are, but not too much that they distort all over the place.
What do you think?
Oh yeah, but aside from that rant, I'm still just learning how to draw the things (starships), haha.
Pretty soon I'll be incorporating The Many onto the ship.
I have about 7 and a bit weeks to come up with a solid concept from now, after that I will be refining every detail then building it for the rest of the year!
I'll get there eventually, it just a matter of time.

As I'm studing from what has been done at Weta with The Lord of the Rings, they have very strong views on film adaptations, I'n those films they actually cut a few characters out of the story in order to tell it better. Which is kind of like what happens in all adaptations, but for me the Von Braun is the only thing I really need to go into depth with.
John Gilber - Editor for TLOTR: TFOTR
"You know I always find that literal adaptations don't work I think you've got to find what you think is essential to the book and make your movie of that."
The man himself;
Peter Jackson - Director
"You ultimately cant, you can't recreate the world of the lord of the rings, you know, with everything in the books but the thematic material obviously is critically important to translate that from book to film because the themes are ultimately at the heart of any book"
Books aside, System Shock can be treated the same (like a book), and ultimatly some hard-core fans of TLOTR's hated the films, but there is no dening the success of it, Im going to be cheeky and say it was somewhat in part, due to design.

Looks increasingly like something Chris Foss would come up with. Which could be interesting.

You, my good sir, are a god. That is freakin' sweet! I love how the many seem to be holding the two parts of the ship together, the detail is great, right down to the lights. Great job!

Thanks alot, I wish I had more time during the year to show you all the progress, its taken me over two months of solid building and electrical work to rig it up to this stage
Im stoked with how it came out

Wow man.
That is incredible what you have done there. It shows that you payed attention to small details like logos etc.
