I don't own a legal copy of the game nor do I have backup of SSP(I regret that now).I am neither for nor against them putting up for sale on GOG and the like in fact for me that"s preferable to them just taking it down and offering the no options in regards fans being able to playing their favorite games without have to resort to the highway robbery the second hand market can be.
There are still plenty of copies on Ebay and if you don't care about using it as a collectible, you can get a CD very cheap. Even if the CD is damaged and doesn't work, you can still buy it and then pirate it from somewhere with a clean conscience because you still bought the game... data is data. One copy has the same value as a billion copies if you don't distribute it. At least by doing that, the money that originally purchased that disk, which is now in the developers' pockets, is still in THEIR pockets. Only diff is the owners' money changing hands.

I highly doubt the game will ever be made for sale again... It is too old and old fashioned to bother spending money on to try to make it suitable for retail sale especially since it has no copy protection or anything. On top of that any mods that make the game easier to run/play are owned by their respective authors and the SS owner would need to buy those rights for a commercial release (or they should anyway)
I would say they are protecting their recently aquired IP and flexing their muscles...
I have no doubt that SSP will be made available somewhere else on the internet eventually.

Hey look, someone who apparently doesn't know that (

Night Dive has made several classic games available again for the general public, so I don't see why they would act differently this time. SS1 is not remarkably different from games like Strife, the last Wizardry trilogy, and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream as far as its status as a classic old game is concerned.
