The age of the thing is actually a factor against it. It is in very good state but the binding would not cope, no way I'm scanning this, however I intend to take hi-res pictures and make a PDF of it (I have two very good digital cameras at my disposal).
Be patient though, it could take a while.

There are binding-friendly scanners. I think most university libraries have them.
