I have a question about EA's fanatical killing of fan-projects. Wouldn't it be possible to develop a project in secret, release it, then destroy the work so they couldn't trace it to you?
This is hypothetical. Do not report me to the police. Or even worse, EA.
I'm serious
You can't release it on a website, because EA will demand that your ISP shut it down, and if the website is anonymous, then that'll be the end of it. If your name or any contact information is there, they'll first contact you and demand that you remove all reference to the project, giving you a few minutes to put your site in order rather than your ISP just deleting your account. However, in intellectual property cases, EA can ask very very nicely your ISP for contact information for you, and if the ISP tries to protect your privacy even according to a privacy agreement, they become accomplices.
If you start up your own domain, the WHOIS database will have contact information that EA can use to reach you.
So... BitTorrent? I haven't used that much, so somebody else will have to tell you all the ways that can go wrong.

Well dang. Doesn't seem to be any way for any of us hardcore gamers to get what we want done around here.

No, just recreating SS2 in a new engine is impossible. So were you speaking for hardcore gamers or graphics whores? ;)

I can't remember if I suggested it, but Baldur's Gate has something similer...
To cut a long story shot, Baldur's Gate II has a better game engine than BG1. (It's a slightly modified version)
Some clever people realised you could 'mod' BG1 into BG2-so you could play BG1 on a (slightly) prettier game.
The snag? You needed an installation of BG1.
-------
Wouldn't something like this for a SS2 conversion work? You need an installation of SS2 (and ergo in theory a legal copy of it) for, say, sounds and/or textures in order for you to install said conversion, as it would copy/extract said content from said ss2 install?

The difference is that BG1 & BG2 use the same engine.

Im an engine coder since years, and i would take an free, existing open source engine which can compete with the doom3 or quake4 engine. this engine is called "xreal-engine" ( (
http://xreal.sourceforge.net/)).
this engine features realtime shadows, lights, normalmaps and such modern graphic stuff. it is still under heavy development. since it provides same features as the d3 engine, it would fit perfectly to SS2.
i am one of the developers. the thing is to not touch the renderer, keep him as is , and rewrite the gameplay. this engine has graphics better than doom3, fast network protocol, and is running for windows and linux. therefore, with enough 3D / 2D Artists it wouldnt be that hard to start a remake.
Would you say this engine is superior to Irrlicht? Just out of curiosity....i really like Irrlicht but am open for something better!

True, but the .crfs that store sounds (not entirely sure where textures are, I readily admit) are archives-the installer for a conversion to, say, Source could extract the sounds, and place them in the relevant folder in the mod for Source. Without an install of SS2, no sounds.
...that's the theory anyway.

The problem is that EA holds the rights to key elements of the story like characters and names. Try explaining to them how your project only works with SS2 installed... see if they care.

I still don't really understand your argument-mine is, you need a copy of SS2 (and hence in theory own a bought legal copy) in order for the conversion to run-so, EA isn't losing any money; people still have to buy ss2 to play the conversion...
...well whatever. Not as if it'll ever happen.
