Well i got my SS1 working perfectly fine several times on WinXP Professional Edition ;)
Have you tried System Shock Portable ?

Both SS1 and SS2 are running beautifully on my XP Pro system. Though it took a lot more effort to get the former to run, naturally due it's age.

Give it a shot--I started playing SS1 for the first time this week (all the recent Bioshock talk put me in the mood to revisit the world of SS2), and I find the gameplay & story really engrossing, despite the graphics and the somewhat clumsy controls. It helps if you set it to 640x480.
If you apply (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,115.0.html) high resolution patch for it, then you can set resolution even higher. Maximum supported resolution is 1280x1024.

I think you guys just need to download "System Shock Portable". All i need to do is start the *.exe file and it works perfectly fine for me, thinks to Kolya or whoever developed this wonderful thing.
So if you want to try out SS1, go to this page -
(

and download it there. No need for DosBox or anything like that, just start the game (i recommend option 3 when starting the game), maybe set your resolution a bit higher and have fun.

Man, all you people saying that SS1 is better than SS2, then there are people who watch it on YouTube and say that it's too dated for them. You retort that they aren't experiencing the story.
If that's the case, why don't we sign a petition to have Uwe Boll direct a movie about SS1 so that we can all experience the plot without playing the game?

If Uwe Boll would direct a SS1 movie, no one would watch it.

I just finished Bioshock about an hour ago, and I have to agree that it is not up to par with either of the System Shock games. It's more linear, the plot's less compelling, and its use of the voice recordings is far inferior.
That said, it was a thoroughly enjoyable game, and I feel that there are many aspects which are very much in keeping with the spirit of System Shock. First off, I personally feel that the game is very atmospheric. The lighting is magnificent, the music is beautifully inserted into the environment (i.e., through record players and piped-in music), and the 50's feel is captivating. More importantly, in addition to being frightening, the game is disturbing on an emotional/moral level, much like its predecessors.
All in all, I enjoyed Bioshock very much, despite its shortcomings. One thing I think we can hope for is that other publishers and designers will see the success of Bioshock and take it further until we see a game that more closely resembles the Duo we all love so much. Perhaps I'm being a bit optimistic?

Well, experiencing a story within a game like SS 1 & 2 is different from watching a movie about it, due to the immersive aspect of the games.
As for which of the two System Shocks is better--in this case, I think a lot
does depend on the game you played first, since a lot of what I enjoyed and found unique about SS2 (the one I played first) was the atmosphere & story, and the fact that you got to know the other characters only through their logs. All these things pretty much exist in SS1, so since it's the game I'm playing second, they doesn't feel as innovative and "new" to me as they did when I played SS2.
Also, so far (I'm only up to the reactor level in SS1) , I think the characters in SS2 displayed more personality in their logs than the ones in SS1--I don't find myself caring about Abe Ghiran, Althea, D'arcy, etc.., as much as I did Delacroix and the others.
That said, I'm enjoying the hell out of SS1, and I can't stop playing it.

I think you're right, to be honest, as for me it's the other way around. I can still recall several logs and names from Shock 1, but Shock 2's seemed to be not as impressive (I mean, no digitised pictures? Heresy! :p).
