Sure there is, but not all the time.

I've actually never found this to be an issue, I simply loaded my saved game where I last played and everything was back the way it should be. :)

What if friends are over and they start a new game? I gotta change the resolution for them; that's a pain and appears sloppy on my part.

If your friends can't comprehend that things were usually a little sloppy back in the DOS days, they have greater problems.

Most of them don't know what DOS is

Why not create a save game for them ahead of time right at the start with the resolution set up the way you want? That way it's just a case of loading them for them and they can continue to use it as they play.

I thought of doing this—and thank you for the suggestion—but without me around, they'll just hit "new game"

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, System Shock is not a game for casual play. Since you say they don't know what DOS is, I'm guessing you're attempting to cater to a pack of 12-year-olds-- hardly the target demographic for a slow, cryptic, dated-looking game like this.

Not everyone who was alive at that time used, or knew how to use DOS, you know...
