the steam version is already updated, repatching it manually is probably not healthy. verify the game's cache to fix this.
you will need a decent gpu if you want to run the game in high resolutions.

The Steam version of System Shock 2 is pre-patched with the NewDark patch built out of less than officially acquired source code?

it's pre-patched with NewDark, whatever NewDark is. who knows, and who cares, as long as it makes things work.

But I seem to be having problems with performance. I know the game runs on the same Dark Engine as Thief, and the last time I had performance issues with Thief was when I had a 350Mhz Pentium. The framerate in SS2 2.4 is choppy.
Might not be the same on your system but I had to open cam_ext.cfg in a text editor and uncomment the "d3d_disp_limit_gpu_frames 1 1" line otherwise I had a stuttering framerate.

I figured it out. The framerate limit was set to 100, which is way above what my display is capable of. I set it to 60 and now everything is fine. I'm not sure what an unnecessarily high frame rate should normally do on a 60Hz monitor, but in SS2 it caused a lot of stuttering when turning the character horizontally.

I updated my earlier Steam Version to 2.4 -- and then I went on and finally beat the game on Impossible as an O.S.A. guy!
I was so overjoyed that I just wanted to share this with you guys.
I've had this game since it came out a long long time ago...for a while you couldn't play it any more but now thanks to some great guys, we can play it again.

Hi Voodoo --
I got my SS2 from Steam in 2013 I think, I recently noticed there's an update to it on Steam. I just assumed that it was the 2.4 update! I can't tell which version I have right now. I tried using the update history button just now but all I get is an ERROR 21 message :- ? But anyway, great game :- )!
