Yes, I do have an empty "current" folder.
When launching the game through shockED is there anyway to change graphics? It launches in like.. software mode or something. I'm guessing that's why it doesn't crash. I'd like to pump up the graphics and cause it to crash thus proving general relativity that its a graphics problem.

Running in software rendering? Odd, it shouldn't do that.
Do you need DDFix, and, if so, have you applied it to ShockEd? (You can find a pre-patched ShockEd Toolkit .exe in (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121449) the DDFix thread.

With DDfix on i get a black screen but I can hear the game working.
Turn off secondary monitors or graphics cards.

@Kolya
I have already tried that but doesnt help. It neither fixes the black screen nor the crash.
@Nameless Voice
Well I'm not sure if its indeed software rendering but it looks like crap. Textures are extremely plain and i cant see any decals. If you like I can screencap it for you.
No I hadn't. Will try now. Edit : using the patched shocked.exe I get a crash with no extra information in the monolog.log.
Just to clarify : When starting a new game I get a crash to desktop immediately after the loading screen. When starting a custom mission (in this case Abroreturn) I'm able to get in-game but crash after I move. When running a custom mission I've noticed that the newer version of DDfix gives a black screen (though the game works) while with the older version I get to see the game-world. Loading into a custom mission I'm able to do anything that doesn't change my XY position or orientation. I can open the invertory, jump, crouch, lean, swing my wrench but it crashes if I move or look around.
Running both the original missions or custom missions through sockED (loading them into the editor and ALT+G) it runs normally (with the exception of crap graphics) though I still get a crash if I select "new game" or try a level transition (as in activating the main elevator or a bulkhead).

http://sundbergassociates.com/newscorp/images/futurama_prof.jpgOK, somehow I've fixed it. Really strange actually. I hadn't run the original game out of the box. After I installed I applied SS2tool fixes, DDfix and installed SHTUP and Rebirth. So I copied the SHOCK folder from the game disc to my HDD, ran shock2.exe, which came up with a windows warning of know incompatibilities that I blatantly disregarded like the police does civil rights and voila, I was in-game. Ofcourse it froze due to the affinity bug. I selectively applied fixes through SS2Tool. Patch and bug fixes were first. Game ran. Mod ready (though i deselected the option for permanent mods folder). Roger. Installed SHTUP and Rebirth. Got that. Finally DDfix. Game on.
I can't really say where I fucked up the first time. TBH the only difference (except running the game prior to applying the fixes in stages) is that I didn't ask SS2tool to create a permanent mod folder.
Anyway no reason petting a healthy horse. Thank you all for your help. :D

Pardon the necropost, but I'm having this same problem.
I just got a new computer with Win7, and yes, I can't get SS2 to run. I tried installing several suggested mods, tried messing with the compatibility settings, and did everything on Strangebedfellows' troubleshooting checklist, and always the same thing: When I try to start it up, the menu loads fine, but when I try to actually start a new game, it crashes.
I am not very tech-savvy, so I would very much appreciate any help that can be given. :)

...that seems to have done it. Why did I not try that first? :o
In any case, thanks.

Now if i could get Hardware acceleration and EAX sound to work under Windows 7. Installed the Realtek beta thingy and the EAX patch with ss2tool but still EAX is greyed out. Hardware acceleration is at least not greyed out but is unable to change to ON. It might not make a difference, or it would.
