System Shock 2 on Windows 7

Kolya i've actually deleted the movies cause at first it wouldn't even get to the menu but i've tried the LGVID.AX rename, also registered it along with ir50_32.dll but still does not work.

ATM i'm unable to reboot, running a simulation and need about 20ish hours more, but i'll try it as soon as i'm able.

This is actually my second attempt at playing on win7. First was with RC and manual patching, tweaking etc (hadn't noticed SS2Tool at the time) but still failed in the same way : crash to desktop with a "stopped working" error just after the loading animation.

For the record i'm running c2d, nforce 680sli and ATI 4870 with the latest drivers.

Edit : So, I rebooted but still bollocks. Crash to desktop right after the loading screen. Any ideas?

There's been some mention of people with certain ATI cards having issues with the current version of DDFix and being forced to use one of the old, buggy versions.

I've downloaded an earlier version of DDfix (1.1.1 to be exact) and though it didn't work I noticed the following requirement in the readme that I think might be causing the crashes :

"No SafeDisc copy protection"

I installed from my original SS2 disc and haven't messed with sshock2.exe (except of course applying the DDfix) so I'm guessing SafeDisc is on.

EDIT : Scratch that, just noticed that SS2tool removes cd-check as part of bug fixes.

I tried playing with the resolution and manually setting the refresh rate to my monitors native and got a different kind of crash "Your video hardware is not supported by SS2", again just after the loading screen. Having the game crash on me with its own error, instead of a general windows error, is a step in the right way methinks. :>

Again sorry for shamelessly bumping this thread but I would really appreciate any further input. Especially from people having successfully run the game in win7x64.

Just to recap :

-Installed the game from the original cd. No hickups. I did change the directory to drive:\games\sshock2win7 (dont ask)
-Applied SS2Tool with all options selected. Selected my monitors native resolution of 1680x1050 during DDfix installation.
-Installed SHTUP and Rebirth.
-Ran the game.
At this point it crashed on me just after launching. I removed the cutscenes (renamed the folder) and i was able to get into the main menu. When i start a new game I get the loading screen, load up to ~99% (the loading bar doesn't seem to finish loading) the screen flashes (like a resolution change) and crash to desktop with the generic w7 error "Application has stopped responding".

I've also tried the following :
-LGVID.ax fix. Registered LGVID and dlls with windows.
-Changed options in the DDfix.ini. Set refresh rate to 60 (monitors native), turned off AF and some other options. Also tried changing resolution. At some point (at 800x600) I get a crash saying that my "graphics hardware is not supported".
-Changed SS2Tool's DDfix with an older one.
-Completely removed DDfix.
-Removed SSTUP and Rebirth.
-Checked if I'm missing Earth.mis or some soundfile (as pointed out in some other threads) but everything that should be there is there.
Unless stated otherwise I always get a crash to desktop, whatever I try.

This is a bit complex, but you could try installing (http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=387.0) the ShockEd Toolkit, running ShockEd, going into game mode with Alt+G, and seeing if it crashes there. If it doesn't, try hitting Esc to get the menu, and then starting a new game from there, at which point it should crash.

Once you get the crash, open the file monolog.txt and paste the contents here (in particular, the section that says which module the crash happened in - the huge list of running processes is unnecessary.)

It might work, or the monolog might be empty because it crashed before it could create one. Worth a try, though.

I've also managed to get a second larger log after i tried loading the earth.mis (with loaded fine) and started a new game. Similar to this one though i noticed for some weird reason it loads a couple of DLLs from appdata\dropbox (which is an online storage app). I'll post it if you like.

The error seems to be in a function "_dbMergeLoadTagFile". I have no idea what that means, though. Sounds like some kind of error reading a file. I suppose you could double-check all the access permissions on the files in the SS2 folder.

Permissions are normal. I have read and write access to all files.

If I load a mission (for example command1.mis) it loads fine through shockED. If i use the evelator button to transfer to another map it crashes. Is there any special kind of player_spawn trigger that could be messing up?

BTW how did you get the "_dbMergeLoadTagFile" through the log file? Did'nt see it mentioned anywhere.

I downloaded a fan mission (Arboreturn to be exact) that replaces the original earth.mis with its own. I can now start a new game without crashing directly. With DDfix on i get a black screen but I can hear the game working.
I disabled DDfix and got to see too. In any case though, once i start moving it crashes. If I stay still (not changing the rendering point at all) I can play with the inventory, crouch, jump etc.

Also having replaced the original earth.mis I can start a new game through shockED without crashing.
Also got it "working" with the old version of DDfix.

I'm leaning towards this being a graphics issue.

You do have a "current" folder in your SS2 folder, right?
