Pretty much does what it says on the tin.
Are there any mods I should install for my first playthrough of SS2, or should I just play it through 'vanilla?'

At least play through the first map of the Von Braun without any mods, to get an idea of how it looked originally.
And check out the Newbie's Guide to SS2.

i would say at least start with SHTUP- it doesn't actually change gameplay or how anything looks, just gives the textures higher resolution (and it's a little fun to try and read some of the printouts)
rebirth improves the models, but it also changes something essential about many of them. for example, the eyes- there was something about the original corpses that made them look so very dead, more than just a body on the floor.

Just go with SHTUP for the first time. It doesn't really change anything important, it just makes the signs and computer screens and stuff higher resolution. Rebirth on the other hand, dramatically changes the models of the monsters and crew members. Sure they look nice enough, but in my opinion, some of them are no where near as scary as the original models (hybrids in particular). It's almost as though they have a somewhat cartoony feel to them.

Actually in adition to rebirth I would recommend a mod somebody was working on. Not sure what it was called but its up on strangebefellows. Gave each deck corpses its own clothes, redid the hybrids so they looked, in my oppinion, even creepier, and sadly made the water pink....
The ONE complaint i have about this mod, water aside, is that the cyborg ninjas have transparent spots all over the skin. Its like black=transparent for that texture or something.
