This is why elevator doors always seem to close in your face: When you leave a level, the game saves a snapshot of the level exactly as it is. When you return to a level, the game restores the level exactly as it was. The elevator doors are part of the level-- every level has its own copy of the elevator. The elevator doors, when opened, automatically close after a few seconds.
So if the elevator doors on deck 1 are a half-second from closing when you press the button to go to deck 2, the next time you return to deck 1, the doors are going to finish waiting that half-second, and close.

Wow, what a blast from the past. It's been ages since I've been here. I'm glad to see younger people pick up System Shock 2 and enjoy it :)

yeah, I was actually quite surprised when the game got released on GOG, many young, first time players seemed to genuinely like the game, despite the outdated graphics and occasional flaws. even steamboys seem to be quite happy, for the most part.
guess the world is not going to hell as fast as I've originally thought.

Greetings Members of the Collective, I am Syy from Syyborg Gaming, and today I've been told to review System Shock 2.
Yes... A game in which I, beautiful goddess that I am, only make my show stopping appearance halfway through. I was able to divert funds from Looking Glass Studios and make them go bankrupt, and I even tied the rights to the game up in some much litigation that no one would ever be able to play it ever again. But now it's made a show stopping reappearance on GOG and Steam, and I have only one final course of action. Go right to the heart of the problem and force reviewers to give it a bad review, so that no one will play it ever again. So please continue, you parasite. I'll be watching. Don't disappoint me.
