system shock 2.. getting to deck 1 - by cgarr

recently i grabbed a copy of system shock 2 and im having a blast.
especially now that i've uninstalled vista and got windows xp!
well the gossip aside im having a problem in the game.
first, getting the game to run was no biggie. i did exactly what the faqs said and there was no problem at all. only played 2 hours of the game but those 2 hours were so much excitement! then came the problem. u know the part where u get the code from doctor watsons log and finally go down the ladder to get to deck 1 engineering?
there is a loading screen as you go down the ladder...
but the next level won't load properly. It does load. but very slowly. then after the loadings done (the percentage bar is filled), the game will just stay in the loading screen... but i don't think the game is frozen or something.. or maybe it is.. i really don't know.
i don't think its anything addressed to in the myriad of faqs ive been pillaging through to get system shock 2 to run on my computer. i was wondering if any of you had the same problem and knew a way to deal with it..
or anyone had a save file that is saved right at the beginning of deck 1 engineering..... please help.. I CANT STAND MY LIFE WITHOUT SYSTEM SHOCK!!!

Most likely your .mis file for Engineering is corrupt. You should try extracting it from the CD.

yeah.. you were right..
i tried to copy eng1.mis and eng2.mis files manually from the cd and got a crc error... now how tragic is that.. i get the game working smoothly but theres something wrong with the cd..... hmm is there any other solution to this than not going out and looking for another copy of the game or downloading from the abandonware sites?.....

You can try another computer and see if it's CD drive reads the disc properly. Or you can simply get the scratches filled up and/or clean anything that shouldn't be on the surface.

Ooh, engineering. If this is your first time through, you're gonna have fun :thumb:

He'll become a man when he finishes deck 1, it is the first real challenge for new SS2 players.

TTLG doesn't like piracy

It's not piracy if you own a legally acquired copy, dorks.

I was just idly wondering how is this different from other 39934889223 topics, where people scratched/lost/burnt/got eaten/whatever their CD, and got promptly shut down/flamed to death. Double standards, much?
