Alright, I'm an avid gamer. I've always enjoyed video games of every type, but along every turn, I've always heard of one game that everyone seems to unanimously be praised. System Shock 2.
Now I decided to borrow it from a friend recently after much badgering from him, and after installing it, it quickly became apparent it wouldn't work by default. So I went online and got my friends to help me tweak it out to get it to work, yet despite all tweaks (Disabling 1 core, creating a user.cfg, ect.) I still cannot play the game. I've managed to get as far as starting a new game, but it will load and simply crash to a "This Program has stopped working" error.
We believe this is a problem with Vista, however, there is no guide to play System Shock 2 on Vista. The only one I have found applies only to early Vista betas, and no longer works. Has anyone got it work so far on Vista? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Tiger,
1st: Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Germany.
2nd: System Shock 2 runs under Vista very well.
There is a little bit work, but it runs.
Look here:

There is a Guide for SS2 for Vista. It's in German, but I hope, You can follow.
Short Translation:
1. Insert SS2-CD an klick "Run" Type in x:\setup.exe -lgntforce --change x to your CD/DVD-Path
Make a full Installation.
2. Search on the SS2-CD for "iv5play(.exe)" and install that very old Codec.
Then You have to register that Codec in Vista.
Start the "DOS-Prompt" as Administrator and type in
regsvr32 "c:\sshock2\LGVID.AX"
Maybe You have to change the path c:\sshock2 to the path You installed SS2.
3. Download the official Patch an install it: (
http://ss2.plasticcloud.com/)
4. Search in the Installation-Folder of SS2 for "cam.cfg" and open it with the editor.
At the End of the file type in:
safe_texture_manager
sfx_no_asynch_all 1
Safe the File.
5. In the Installation-Folder create a new file (Text Document) an name it
safe_texture_manager
6. Download this File (
http://www.sshock2.com/files/shock2fixed.zip)
and copy it to the Installation-Folder of SS2.
7. Right Klick on the shock2fixed.exe an modify as shown
8. Start SS2 with sshock2fixed.exe. You will need the CD to play
If You are using a Core Duo or Core2Duo Prozessor, You better disable one CPU, because SS2 will get some Problems on that CPU's.
I tested it and it works on my Vista Ultimate.

Uh, are you sure that you need to create file named safe_texture_manager? You mean user.cfg-file, right?
This string is already in cam.cfg-file so there is no need to put it in user.cfg-file.

You need to run SS2 as an Administrator in order for the videos to work. The game may crash if you don't.

In regards to compatibility settings, I have found that, oddly enough, only the "Windows XP w/ SP2" option will allow System Shock 2 to run.

Start the "DOS-Prompt" as Administrator and type in
regsvr32 "c:\sshock2\LGVID.AX"
things were going well until i did that and it told me "The module "c:\games\sshock2\LGVID.AX" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005."
hmm... and things were going so well.

You should get it working, even I got it working with my 64bit vista =). So you checked your DOS-Prompt is runned as administrator? When I tried to register the module I couldn't, but after I runned DOS as administrator it worked very well. So right click the shortcut of DOS and check all places, you should find the "run as administrator" box ;)

Hi,
I've recently bought a new laptop with Vista Ultimate x64 on it. I'm trying to get SS2 to run on it but I'm having problems. I looked around on forums and most seem to have problems with the videos... mine work fine strangely.
I own the SS2 disk and it's version 2.3 I think.
I install fine, go to the .exe and set compatablity to windows 2000, and start the game. I then go to task manager and deselect one of the cores. (dual core pc)
However, problems seem to start after the training zones. Once I couldn't get further than the choice of which shuttle to take (for the 4 year training) without it crashing. Other times it crashes after I complete the training. Also, the sound usually goes during the 4 year selection thing.
Any ideas? Also, are the mods significantly better than the version I have?
