I just wanted to say what worked for me concerning this issue because the thread I wanted to post too is apparently closed, and this answer does not seem to be easy to find. In fact, I'm very lucky to barely pass by this post from a thread back in 2000.
(((((This is the answer at the end of this post for all those who don't care about the back-story:
Apparently the answer for me was to merely create a folder inside the sshock2 folder and name it "current" (without the quotation marks). Now my game saves without a problem. I don't know why, but when I installed the game, apparently, it did not create the "current" folder.
For any wondering the file path for me, where I created this "current" folder was:
C:\Program Files\sshock2 (As you probably know, if you input a different directory path, yours will be a different path to reach the sshock2 folder)
)))))
First:
I am using an XPS Gen4 with Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 3. I have a Pentium 4, 3.73GHz Processor with Hyper-Threading Extreme (which from what I understand only really says that I have One physical processor that runs as Two Virtual Processors), ATI Radeon 4850 1Gb from Sapphire Tech. and Sound Blaster Audigy 2. Now you know what I'm using to run this game.
Second:
I am currently running the latest version of the game, which as far as I can tell is the 2.3 multiplayer patch. I know for sure that I am NOT using any particular compatibility mode for sshock.exe. Now it's been a while so I don't actually remember downloading and installing the patch, but I must have because when I recently tried to install it, it gave me an error message saying that my game was already at 2.3 rather than 1.15 or something like that. And besides that I apparently backed up the original because I there is a separately titled back-up folder in the main directory of the game with shock2.exe, LGVID.AX, and SHOCK2.ICD in it.
Anyhow, back to my main point:
The game kept crashing for me every time I attempted to save my game so I looked around the internet and found nothing until I came upon this single tiny little post that completely answered with the cure to my problem.
It was posted by HKPrince and here's the quote:
"Well, I have this saving problem once when I am trying beta FM loading on real game. Do you have the current folder under Shock2? SS2 needs it to save game even it may be empty at first, I don't know why SS2 can't create it."
It was found on this forum:
