One of the things I really loved about SS1 is that it rarely tells you explicitly what to do, and instead lets you find out by finding logs and other information.
My biggest fear for a remake would be that it would have far more mission-control hand-holding (ruining the sense of isolation) and more giant quest arrows telling you exactly what to do next.

If they want mainstream appeal, they have to do a ton of streamlining, and in today's climate, that unfortunately means foolproofing the game. It is not only SS1's terrible interface that would have to go, but probably much of its mechanical depth and complexity.
So basically, how the SS2 interface came to be. That seemed to work out okay.

I could live with that - but it is not 2000 anymore either, and too many hopeful games have become the victim of streamlining. I hope it won't happen here, but don't have high hopes.
Well, we will see.

My guess is that OtherSide is more interested in developing System Shock 3 than redoing System Shock 1. At least it sounded that way in the Twitch stream with Paul Neurath and Stephen Kick. All the more reason to support Underworld Ascendant.
I would guess that if Underworld is moderately successful, we'll see OtherSide and Night Dive run a Kickstarter for System Shock 3.
This is all very exciting to me. Looking for news about a sequel to System Shock 2 and trying to get the original System Shock to run on Windows was what brought naive little me to TTLG back in July of 2000: (

Forgive me for asking but some of this still seems unclear to me... what rights are they holding on to?
To my very limited understanding: The rights to System Shock were divided up. EA had rights over the name & distribution (I think). The story & characters were (supposedly, I think) divided up amongst various creditors. Am I wrong (could someone please clear up this mess)?
So exactly which ones do NightDive have? Because they seem to be also talking about a possible System Shock 3.

Night Dive obtained the rights a while back when they managed to get both games released on digital distribution platforms. They had the rights to System Shock 2 back in 2013 when they released it to GOG and then Steam. However, it wasn't until this year that they sorted out the rights to System Shock 1 and then obtained those rights which finally gave them control of the entire franchise.

What was EA holding onto though? And did NightDive get those as well?

EA had rights to the trademarks and names, which they gave to LGS' insurance company in around 2009 I think.

Night Dive has 100% of the System Shock rights now. So EA has no say in it at all anymore.
And if SS3 is done, I'd want it done by Otherside. Only they would do the game justice imo.

My sentiments exactly icemann... I would love to see Otherside make System Shock 3. Just look at the videos on (
