Is there a utility to open the data files from SS1 and access the video files? I'd like to put the intro and ending on youtube, but I'd rather not use fraps or other recording utils if I can avoid it. I apologize if this has been answered somewhere else, but I couldn't find anything.

I have already converted all movies from Macintosh version of System Shock 1 to watchable format. There is no way getting them from DOS version.
You can find them here: (

Except if you count DosBox v0.65.
Here is a low-res intro from the DOS version with the seldom heard Tandy and PC-speaker audio for your enjoyment.
Pre-Adlib FM:Low-res video Intro sample: 2.05MB AVI (2:05) (11,025Hz mono)

Low-res video Intro sample: 2.96MB AVI (2:06) (22,050Hz stereo)

Hooray! Soon we'll be able to view the same videos but with less convenience and worse quality!

There is also another way to do this in DOS. If you grab the texture extractor and extract the audio files, you can find all of the images and sound files that make up the movies (including the v-mails). Its then just a matter of stringing them together in the right order (would also help if the texture extractor was editied to include the alpha chanel for each pixel because each image in a movie is dependant on the last, and simply places the next image ontop of the previous).
This is more an academic point then a recomendation (it would take a lot of work), though doing it this way would allow for a slightly higher quality of audio (seeing how you won't get any of the minor changes due to differences in sample rates and what not).

Imagine...
Little Billy has just got a new computer!
BILLY: Jeepers, this new PC looks swell!
NARRATOR: That's right Billy, It's running brand new Windows Vista!
BILLY: Aw gosh, Vista is neato but what about my old DOS games? I am of course too young to play them, but I just LOVE watching the intros!
NARRATOR: Don't worry, DOSBox makes it easy to play all your old favorites on new systems!
(75 years later)
OLD MAN BILLY: I GOTS THE MOUSE WORKING!
Or possibly...
Johnny YouTube: Click. Click.
SHODAN: New Atlanta. Sector 11. Building 71G...
EDIT: That Tandy sound whips the llama's ass!

Since when do you need DOSBox to watch movie files?
AxTng1 on 11/11/2006 at 01:47
If you need to start the game to watch them.

But the movie files are already available in .avi or .mov format, and I believe that's what ZB was referring to. Those movies are certainly better than anything you can get from YouTube.
