@zac1302 -- which do you mean by the 'edited executable', Mok's or mine?
Sorry about the late reply (and the incoherent post).
What I meant was that your patch (which you said was based on Mok's exe) had removed the need to play around with Win98's memory settings on one of the PCs I used and guessed that it was because of Mok's code.
(Hopefully you can understand me this time.) :)
Also, 800x600 fullscreen is
very smooth on a P2-266 w/64MB ram and S3 Virge. But it still gets stuck on the resolution switch on the XP PC. (It has Intel onboard video btw.)

Maybe you could try popping that card back into your computer sometime to see how it copes.
Good idea, but the card has already been returned to the store. :erg:

There are now versions based on the original CDSHOCK.EXE (as in, not the XP-patched version) available for download, links edited into the original post.
Bear in mind that since the unpatched version won't run on my system, these are completely untested; but if you're having trouble getting the patched version working and you normally play with the unpatched version, they're probably worth a try.

Well, now I get
"Our system has been shocked! But remember to Salt the Fries!"
when I try to start a new game (when I click "Start" right after I type a name and choose difficulty settings).

Yeah, same here. It's error code 3007, a memory error. The "could not make email cursor" problem. I'm almost tempted to go through old nVidia drivers to see if that would help at all, but that would take some time. :erg:

That's the typical error you get when trying to run it without DMPI memory, or on an NT system without VDMS and/or Mok's patch, etc...
I'm not sure if it's actually possible to run it on NT without Mok's patch, but if you want to persist try fiddling with the Memory settings in the shortcut. This isn't an issue with the highres version, though, the unmodified CDSHOCK.EXE will [?should] exhibit this behaviour as well.

I fiddled with the unedited CDSHOCK.EXE for quite a while, and never did get it working properly. No memory settings would help it.
I wonder, what would happen if you tried to run the high-res version with DOSBOX? Would it bomb out too?
ToxicFrog on 15/9/2005 at 01:36
It should run just fine, until your system, stressed beyond its limits, hurls a white-hot ball of molten silicon that used to be the CPU out through the side of the case. And SS1 in DOSBOX isn't 100% stable anyways...
Here's what the compatibility chart should look like:
Code:
DOS DOSBOX Win32 WinNT
Plain Yes Slow Yes No?
Hires Yes V.Slow Yes? Untested No?
Mok ? ? ? Yes, with VDMS etc
Mok+Hires ? ? ? Yes, with VDMS etc

Well, the high-res version built off of Mok's patch froze up, the newer one gave the Salt the Fries error before even starting the game. Only this one said that it couldn't find the pallete, as opposed to not being able to create the e-mail cursor.

Do you mean XP? It's possible to run SS1 on XP with no problems; I've done it. I just get an error when I start the game saying that it "could not open the COM1 port requested by the application." I click ignore, and it gives me another one that says it "could not open the COM2 port requested by the application." I click ignore again, and the game runs without a hitch. No fancy stuff needed. I don't know why this changes with the high-res version.....

When I say NT, I mean NT, 2k, XP, and 2k3, all of which use the NT kernel.
And it shouldn't change with the high res patch, especially not before the game proper even starts!
