Well it's a really really ugly solution, but quick. First of all the problem lies somewhere with the soundsystem in shock and or the way it plays quicktime files. Anyway I downloaded a collection of what I guess was abandonware Sierragames. And to make a long story short, I found that after having started one of these games, Shock worked perfectly in Classic. I'm using Goblins 2 as the "kick-start", just run it and then quit it and shock will run. I borrowed Gabriel Knight 2 and that makes Shock run as well. (EDIT: and these two games aren't the only ones that makes it work)
It sure isn't pretty, but it works.

I'll pass that on, although it doesn't sound like the same problem (the issue he's having is that it runs, but the screen doesn't update except when SS1 doesn't have focus.)

it is exactly that problem that is fixed! :)
i've tried a lot of things and it seems like the sierra games initializes something with their soundsystem or the way they handle qt that makes classic able to run shock.

Right-click, Properties on the VDMS shortcut.
Ah.....
I don't have a VDMS shortcut either. Whenever I want to use VDMS, I just right-click and click "Run with VDMS." So.....how exactly do I go about making a shortcut?

You might only have VDMS sound partially installed, like I did. If it's fully installed, when you right click on the shortcut, there should be a 'Run with VDMS sound' option with a musical note beside it. Once you're sure it's fully installed, here's the instructions you need from the FAQ. :)

STEP 8:
Right click on CDSHOCK.bat and in the pop-out menu you should see "RUNS VDMS" and
"RUN VDMS - but with a musical note graphic infront of it". Click on the one that
has the musical note infront of it.
- Now a window that says VDMSound Configuration wizard should pop up. Select
SETUP A CUSTOM CONFIGURATION and click NEXT.
- Then CREATE A NEW CONFIGURATION FROM SCRATCH, then click NEXT
- Click NEXT again.
- If you like there is a box that says create a desktop shortcut, otherwise click NEXT.

Okay.....I'll have to re-install and try that. Thanks!

In specific, you want to 'remember my settings' on the last screen. That will leave behind a VDMS shorcut (in the same directory) that can then be reconfigured, moved around, copied, used as a bookend, etc. This is particularly useful if the default settings don't work and you don't want to set it up /each time/ you run, or if you have multiple games that need different settings (or even one game that you want to run sometimes with one configuration and sometimes with another).
(also, the 'Run with VDMS (without musical note)' option has been removed in recent versions of VDMS, so don't panic if it's not there...the FAQ should probably be updated at some point.)
[Edit]
@La0s: it worked! Thanks (on behalf of Vorn) who has spent much of this evening SQUEEEing over the engine.

Well. Maybe I need to get a better version altogether.

It's actually quite easy, once you sacrifice your mind, soul and sanity to the immortal Cthulhu in exchange for knowledge man was not meant to know.
...which is what I'm convinced the designers of the 8086 did. :weird:
