What I meant is that in
in the directory you unpacked the CD to, there will be a 'CDROM' directory, containing CDSHOCK.EXE and SSHOCK.EXE, and that's where you put it.
Right. But I don't have one, because of the way I set SS1 up.

Perhaps it'dve been clearer just to say 'put it in the same directory as CDSHOCK.EXE'?
No, I understood exactly what you meant. The problem was that I didn't have that directory.

Also, what video card is it? The specific model number, I mean...
Lesee.....NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440. That's about all.....

And if you aren't using VDMS, try running it via VDMS and ticking 'enable basic VESA support', and perhaps playing with NOLFB?
Well, just VDMS doesn't work.....where is the 'enable basic VESA support' checkbox?

(oh, and if you haven't actually been playing in 640x480 all this time - does it work for you?)
Yes, 640x480 works beautifully. I just have to use MOUSE2KV to speed up my mouse, or turn up the sensitivity manually.

Right-click, Properties on the VDMS shortcut.

Wow! Very nice work. :)

:wot: Wow. Just...wow :wot:
I'll try this when I get back from the US, in a bit over two weeks :)

Hmm I get the Out of Scan Range problem too when I try to run it in 1024x768. I usually ran it in 640x480, so I wouldn't think VESA support is the problem, though I tried enabling it in VDMS anyway. Unlike TNT and Enchantermon, I'm running on a GeForce 6800GT...Maybe it's a problem with "newer" nVidia cards? :erg:
ToxicFrog on 11/9/2005 at 00:30
Maybe. I'm running it on a Radeon 9800 myself, which might explain why I'm not seeing this issue.
The parameters the monitor reports while playing SS1, by the way:
800x600: 37.7kHz horizontal, 60Hz vertical
1024x768: 48.2kHz horizontal, 60Hz vertical
(speaking of which, anyone know how to get it working at >60Hz?)

Toxic Frog this is truly great news and an impressive achievement. Now I'm probably going too far asking this, but (after fighting with shock for mac os (and finally getting it to work with out emulation or sheepshaver)) I would like to know if you could do the same with the Mac version, or if that is too hard? Since I "recently" switched from my old pc to an iBook I can only play shock on mac, and I know I'm not alone, so it would be really nice if it's doable.
I'm unfortunately not at all able to do any coding, but if you are interested in doing this (if it isn't too hard) just email me at lars@gostil.dk (<- it makes sense in danish) and ) I'll give you the files you need :)
and again: great work!

Most of all he'd need your iBook I guess... ;)

don't you think some sort of emulation would suffice? :)
or if there's some sort similarity between the executables, that he would be able to find it in the mac version.
ToxicFrog on 11/9/2005 at 20:26
Unfortunately, there's nothing I can really do with the mac version - I have no knowledge of the PPC architecture and instruction set, even if I did the only Mac emulators I have available only do 680x0-based emulation, and the graphics interface is, AFAIK, completely different...
It's almost certainly achievable, but it would need someone who actually groks the mac to implement. Sorry.
While you're here, though - did you get it running in OSX? I have a friend who's been trying to get SS1Mac running in OSX forever and has yet to succeed, so if you do have it working on OSX I'd love to hear how you did it.
