The GPF could easily have just been a hiccup that would've happened with the original .exe file, I've had them before. I might have time to do some testing later to see if I have a setting I need to change to get your files working properly. Obviously, if I turn up anything I'll let you know. :)

Well, you need to turn on VESA/SVGA, but if you hadn't already done so the original wouldn't work at 640x480, so.
I'll get my Shadowy Contacts to work testing it and post if anything turns up on this end, many of them run XP boxen.

Still can't get it working on XP, but they worked perfectly on both 98 PCs - I didn't even need to change the memory settings.

Win98 and WinXP use memory totally differently. Win98 still has DOS running somewhere underneath it (or rather, off to the side somewhere) but WinXP is a pure Protected Mode OS.

I know that, it's just on one of the PCs I used usually crashes unless I change the DPMI and conventional memory settings and it didn't with the edited executable. (Because it changes the way memory's handled, right?)

Installation is simple: download the one you want, stick it in your CDROM/ directory...
Um.....okay, I haven't installed SS1 from a CD, I downloaded it. If I unzip SS1, there is a CDROM directory created, I don't have this directory in the installation I play from. I can't remember how I installed the game; it was so long ago.....
Anyway, I just put the file CDSH1024.exe in C:/SSHOCK and ran it, and now I'm having the same problem as TNT, but I am not using anything special (Mok's patch, VDMSound, DosBox, MOUSE2KV, etc.) to run it. Same thing happens with 800x600 (no general protection fault, though).
I'm using Windows XP with NVIDIA GeForce 4.
If the description of the contents of my SS1 folder is confusing, I can post a full tree.

P.S. I can't seem to delete CDSHOCK.exe or CDSH1024.exe (I made copies that I'm trying to get rid of); Windows says that the files are in use, but they aren't.

I don't know if this will be a lead or not, but Enchantermon and I have the exact same video card, and we're experiencing the same thing with our monitors shutting off. Could it be something to do with the video cards, possibly?

That's a distinct possibility; I can't believe I forgot to mention that.
.....
Guess what I just discovered? I thought I had been playing SS1 in 640x480 all this time, but I was really playing in 320x200.....
Of course, now I'll have to use MOUSE2KV, since my mouse is too slow in 640x480. :erg:

I played in 300x200 for quite a while, too. If you don't feel like getting Mouse2KV working, try creating a shortcut to your mouse properties, putting it near the SS1 shortcut, and jacking the acceleration whenever you go to play. :)

@zac1302 -- which do you mean by the 'edited executable', Mok's or mine?

What I meant is that in
in the directory you unpacked the CD to, there will be a 'CDROM' directory, containing CDSHOCK.EXE and SSHOCK.EXE, and that's where you put it.
Perhaps it'dve been clearer just to say 'put it in the same directory as CDSHOCK.EXE'?
Also, what video card is it? The specific model number, I mean...
And if you aren't using VDMS, try running it via VDMS and ticking 'enable basic VESA support', and perhaps playing with NOLFB?
(oh, and if you haven't actually been playing in 640x480 all this time - does it work for you?)
