I have intel 82845 series. I's integrated on the mobo. I can set the shared memory in bios, i think right now it's set to 32mb.
at least shock2 works :erm:

Windows says the video memory size is 32mb [via driver properties]. In bios, current setting is 8mb, it is actually the largest possible value. Maybe it's dynamic?

I looked up the 82845G on-board graphics processor which appears to be what you have. The system BIOS allows the initial startup for VGA/VESA video frame buffer memory to be set to 512kb, 1MB or 8MB of VIDEO RAM drawn from you main memory. If it is set to 8MB then you are more than OK for all video modes possible in System Shock up to 1280x1024. This memory is fixed at startup and does not change. The dynamic part of the memory management is under Windows for DirectX or OpenGL games. The DMVT will allocate up to 32MB on an as needed basis for Windows games. The VESA memory at 8MB covers all supported VESA video modes.
The 82845G has VESA 1.2, 2.0, 3.0 compatibility so VESA mode 100h should work just fine and if your system BIOS has the pre-allocation of 8MB of system RAM dedicated to the graphics system as frame buffer you should be OK. The problem must lie elsewhere...

What about this refresh.exe? It has been suggested here as it might help, but it does not.
It alows you to set refresh rate for resolution and bit depth. There is a test function too. The display is broken, a bit like the shock. It might be a simmilar problem perhaps? Can I try something else?

Go to this (
http://www.vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?p=51390#51390) post at VOGONS and look for my post
(dvwjr - about 8 posts up from the end) on the date 2005-01-29. This message has an attached file: VGATEST.EXE which can be executed at a WinXP MS-DOS prompt. It has a few command-line options, try it with option '4' to see how your display/video adapter function for SVGA 256 color resolutions. System Shock uses 640x400 (VESA mode 100h) and 640x480 (VESA mode 101h) in the CD-release of mid-December 1994.
If you can't see the output of VGATEST.EXE option '4' under Windows XP, then boot with a DOS floppy and try VGATEST.EXE with your display/video adapter under regular old DOS. If you can't see the SVGA modes under DOS then you're screwed...

thanks Dvwjr, looks like I am indeed screwed. The display is just broken blocks of various colors.
I was able to get it working on my other pc, so i'm good to go!

Has anyone tried this in DOS 6.22 under the newer versions of VMWare?

What makes absolutely no sense to me in this thread is that the OP keeps referring to CDSHOCK.exe. There is no CDSHOCK.exe in the install directory. When installing the game from CD to C:\sshock, the installer places CDSHOCK.bat and the required files into the specified folder. It does not put CDSHOCK.exe in there.
I searched through this entire thread for the word .bat and not a single person has really mentioned this confusing oversight. What version of the game are people running in this thread?. I have both the original SS CD-ROM, and the other CD-ROM version with the Terminal Access manual included on the CD in eBook format.
I mean yeah, I can copy CDSHOCK.exe over from the CD dir (E:\CDROM) into C:\sshock, then use the hi-res patch, and it works fine, but neither ToxicFrog nor anyone else mentions this. What's going on?
EDIT: Oh wait, is everybody running this on WinXP with Mok's CDSHOCK.exe?

Apparently. I know I am, so I was never confused, and I guess everyone else was, too.

Nah, not all of us run XP!
I use a HD copy of my SS CD, though, so I also didn't need to overwriite anything on the actual CD.
