On the one hand, this is good in that it's not a problem with my code.
On the other hand, this is bad because that means I can't fix it.
I've got a friend who's going to test it with a GF6800, and next time I'm at home!fergus I'll be able to test it on a GF2 - hopefully you're right and this is just a GF4 issue, or possibly an issue with a few specific driver versions.

That could very well be the case. Enchantermon and I both don't need the safe_texture_manager fix for SS2, so we probably have very similar, if not the same, driver versions. It would be just typical if the only working driver version for SS1 ended up breaking SS2, eh?

This is why I stopped using nVidia cards.

I'll report that the first release of hi-res SS1 runs wonderfully on my nVidia 6800 FX. I haven't tried version 2 yet.

If that works, it's an issue with the card.
It worked! :( That's just wrong.....

I have a Gforce 4 MX 440 and of course 800 600 and 1024 768 don´t work to me :) didnt work v1 and doesnt work v2.
I think it´s not patch code related. Not driver related. I´ve used a lot of them and not only for this game :). I supposed it wouldnt work because time ago playing a game called spellcross I only could play in 640 480 resolutions without problems, but the option higher not. The message was the same "out of range" and I had a different driver. Of course the game ran on 256 colours svga.
I think there is a problem with nvidia geforce cards and resolutions of 8 bits / 256 colours higher than 640 480 under Windows XP.
I hope this will help a bit.
sorry for my english. :)

Oh, and I must say too that any game that use svga 256 colours and resolution higher than 640 480 dont work to me. Not only the game Spellcross.
Blood... Redneck Rampage...If I switch to vesa modes higher than 640 It dont work.

Then I think we can mark this off as definitely an nVidia, or at least a GF4, issue.

*growls at NVidia card*
Well, at least this thread helped me discover the whole new world of SS1 in 640x480. That's something, at least. :p Thanks, ToxicFrog! :thumb:

I also have a GeForce4 Ti4200, and use the 56.64 drivers.
It took me a while to get around to trying this, and when I reinstalled shock I found that I couldn't run the game normally through Win98 like I've done for years. Sometimes I get an error window, and sometimes the main menu becomes a garbled unrecognisable mess :/ Sigh. I've no idea what has changed since I last played it.
For testing purposes I ran it from DOS and the original game worked fine there. I then applied the patch (setting 800x600 and 1024x768 as the new resolutions) and the game crashes on start-up with:
Code:
Our system has been shocked!!! But rememeber to Salt The Fries
