The 2600 might be my #1 bucketlist synth of all-time (other than the Minimoog, but that's more of a nostalgia/emotional thing). I pre-ordered the 2600FS the day they were announced and still ended up not getting the order in early enough. :( Definitely grabbing one of these when I'm able to. It's not even the sound (although to my ears, this thing sounds way more alive and authentic than the Bohringer one) or the Depeche Mode nostalgia, I just want one for the pure utilitarianism of it. It's basically a box full of the modules I'd want if I were putting together a bread-and-butter core eurorack system. It'll give my Keystep a reason for existing too, since it will work with the USB host port on the 2600M for power and midi.

The first blast on that Freeman is so good.

Posting in this thread so I don't have to see Kyle Rittenhouse on the main page for a moment.
(
https://www.moogmusic.com/products/animoog-z) Animoog Z is out for iOS/MacOS. The original Animoog is an excellent-sounding software synth although it was fiddly to program and a lot of the wavetables they included were overly metallic. The new version seems similar but streamlines the interface, adds more modulation and effects, and based on the demo, at least, seems to focus more on meatier, classic-synth-type sounds. I still haven't quite figured out a great use for scanning wavetables along an orbit that you draw by hand, but maybe I could get some good drones out of it. Suzanne seems to get it:

In theory wavetables are supposed to be great for adding timbral motion to things. In my experience they mostly just sound like noise reduction artifacts until you filter them, and then you basically end up with something you could do on any reasonably featured analog subtractive synth. The one thing I find them really useful for, and one of the reasons I love the Pro 3, is as an audio rate modulation source for an analog VCO. Or as an irregularly shaped, morphable LFO.

The Shapeshifter has a couple wavetables that just sort of scan through the harmonic series, and with chord mode on they can be really beautiful. I also like finding the wave that's sort of in between sine and triangle. Otherwise I mostly use them, as you say, as a way of getting a more complex sound out of the gate or else as a complex LFO, which the Shapeshifter excels at. You can also sync and one-shot them, which turns them into weird envelopes.

VCV rack 2.0 just got released.
If you buy the pro version (currently $99 rather than $149), you get a VST2 / AAX plugin to use with your DAW.
For me this is pretty huge as it means I can now use all of the Mutable Instruments modules in my writing workflow, as well as multitude of other really useful modules in addition to my physical modular synth.

Yeah I found I was never using it because if you wanted to put something into a track, you literally had to just record something outright & drop the wav into the DAW. And if you wanted to change one little thing you have to do it again. But probably worst of all I'd have to make a whole plan in advance, and that's not the way me and synthing work...
But I already have my DAW open all the time because I'm playing with my keyboard all the time, and I'll just have it open in case I want to record a quick thing. If I could just open VCV on the spur of the moment in the same workflow, I could see myself actually using it.

You could use VCV bridge before, but I never tired because I had read that it was a ball ache.
I could have theoretically used it without any need by having VCV open and just sending clock / reset from my DAW via the ES-3 module and then sending CV back in via the ES-6, but can't be bothered most of the time and would just fire up Softube modular, which works great (but has far fewer modules versus VCV). Will still use Softube for their minimoog emulation being usable in the modular plugin though.
