The inspiration of a generation. His work was the root cause of some of the best music in the last 40 years.
Most members of Pink Floyd, and others who have written biographies etc. belong to the school of thought that Syd has been built up into this larger than life legend. Whist his work within the group was undeniable ditto for his talent, the work that Pink Floyd churned out under his reign was considered by them to lack any of the real talent of insight of the later string of cd's i.e. from a saucer full of secrets (the tracks he didn't write) right through to the wall. The noodling and extended solos that dominated their live gigs was something the band did purely because they lacked material. Luckily for them it was a case of right place, right time...
Now I mean to disrespect to Barrett who really was a truly tragic figure, and a great musician.

Almost every song or reference to a song in this thread has been from the post-Syd Barrett Pink Floyd (or as most everyone simply calls them, Pink Floyd)

Shine On You Crazy Diamond was about Syd Barrett you crazy mong.
I won't even go into the fact that 99.53% of all Water's songs are about Barrett anyway. Either that or his father dying in the war or something.

You're an idiot. There are only two songs that have been linked with Barrett (i.e. wish you were here and shine on). Whilst you can make tenuous connections with other songs like Welcome to the Machine, what really happens is randoms read about Syd and Shine On, and then start screaming on about dedications in every single song
Okay lets see, The Wall, and The Final Cut dealt with war (and were two awesome cds), then there are A Saucerful of Secrets, Obscured by Clouds, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, and Animals, none of which deal with either of your two themes, all of which were primarily driven by Waters' writing.
So, incase you missed it the first time, you're an idiot.

The sequences of "Pink" in the movie "The Wall" during "Comfortably Numb," before he peels off the rot, are references to Syd. The lyrics are not, though. He was distressed over going bald and was taking minoxidil. Before a particular gig, he dumped his pills out on the dressing table, mashed them up, mixed them with lotion (or something, I'll have to dig up the story), and smeared the goop on top of his head. During the show, under the heat of the lamps, he was sweating. In the dim, psychedelic light, Syd's head appeared to be melting like wax as the goop ran down. The other members of the band found the sight very disturbing.
That's from the quotes I've read, anyway.:erg:

Without meaning to sound rude, quotes from where? Purely because I'm always interested in finding out something new about the band. It wasn't from the dvd commentary, I don't think they really mentioned anything about the sequence apart from how tough it was for Geldof to perform.
