It sounds like you can play most Switch 1 games on it, with a few exceptions. I imagine if you're mainly interested in Nintendo games, you're probably good. And yes, Joycons function as a separate controller (and in some games with simpler controls, they can even be two separate controllers, held sideways).

Looks like a good selection of Switch 1 games will be on it. I don't know anything about Nintendo Online. Would I be able to play GameCube and Wii games (that aren't being remade like Zelda Windwaker, which I'll definitely get, having played a little on a friend's GC in the 2000s).
I was hoping I could play all the Metroids and Super Mario platformers I've missed.
Re: the Joy-cons. I've held the ones for the Switch and they are too fiddly for me. I'll be getting the normal sized controllers but wondered if I'll need two or one plus the joy-con "mount" thing.
I'd get the GC controllers but they seem to be limited to existing Nintendo owners, which seems dumb.

The Nintendo Online has a pretty good selection of nes, snes and genesis games, so you should be right there. They are adding gamecube games for the switch 2, but it will be a slow drip, cos nintendo.

Apparently Windwaker is getting a Switch 2 version, so that should be good.

I don't think they're making a version specific for the Switch 2 (yet). It's just the Gamecube version for their online thing. Some fans were upset because this isn't even the HD version (which was only released for the Wii U). Same goes for the HD version of Twilight Princess.

Ah well, the GC version looked fabulous to me so I'm looking forward to all this.

The HD version took out all the fun backtracking across the ocean near the end of the game, so you're better off playing the original.

I don't remember that part specifically, but I know the HD version offers a lot of quality of life improvements. Plus, there's the whole 480p vs 1080p thing, although you have to think they'll upgrade a visual quality a little bit in some form or another.

How so?

I was being tongue in cheek, but the original Wind Waker had a series of fetch quests near the end that a lot of people didn't like but I did, and they removed much of that sequence for the remaster. Then again, I was like 15 when I played it, so who knows how I'd feel about it now.
