I am not sure I have quite figured out how to survive those crushing spells (are they vines?). Sometimes just spamming left-click causes layers of whatever is crushing you to shed, and keeping at this eventually frees me. At other times I keep clicking but nothing happens. I also try jumping and hitting other buttons, but to no avail - I just get crushed to death.
I am obviously missing a trick here. How do you survive those spells when the left click mash is doing nothing? And what determines whether the left-click mash will work or not?

In the Earth Tower of Mage Towers would be one location. I have died there more than once when the left-click mash appeared to be doing nothing against a crusher spell, making me wonder whether I am missing another way to escape them.

Yeah, the attack key works only if you hold a weapon (sword/blackjack/bow) when the spell hits you. The "use" key works regardless of any readied item.
