Are we supposed to have working surround sound with NewDark?
I am on a seemingly quite rare audio-setup with a Club 3D Theatron Agrippa (
http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/theatron-agrippa-dts-71.html) connected to my AV Receiver via toslink. This card is one of the few with a Dolby Digital Live / DTS connect encoder wich turns all audio-signals from my computer into proper Dolby Digital / DTS for my AV receiver.
The thing is that ALL games wich are supposed to have real surround sound and use OpenAL or any other alternative to old Hardware Sound, will shine in full DTS/DD on my system - only Thief series was always stereo-only for me
When I noticed that NewDark supports OpenAL and even allows me to finally use EAX (wich never worked before), I was sure that surround would work too, but it didnt.
Can you think of a reason why on earth OpenAL is not able to get proper surround sound to my speakers?
Keeping in mind that EAX is working with NewDark ... may it be that Thief wasnt developed for 5.1 but quadrophonic sound (wich my soundcard might not be able to handle)?

I must say that when I played SS2 on WinXP with SBLive! in 2003 (!) I've tried quadro speaker setup - and it worked as quadro! Don't have SB cards anymore.

How is the sound configured using Optical Out on that card? I know if I just selected SPDIF out as my active device through my X-Fi to my receiver it would just get a stereo signal, but selecting 'Speakers' and DTS mixing (iirc) in the Creative control panel would give me the 5.1.
Nothing I could do would get any sort of surround sound through the HDMI on my video card though.
