So power occasionally goes off in my place (maybe once or twice a month that I notice) and today's thunderstorm prompted me to get a "proper" surge protector for my desktop (I got those super basic consumer ones). I don't care for UPS so much (power goes off rarely, it's LA so thunders arent frequent either), I just
want to protect my destkop from power surges/sags. My mobo monitoring software has notified me a few times of voltage spikes but nothing happened *shrug*
I remember reading something ages ago how to buy a good surge protector as 90% of the consumer stuff is apparently crap and there's something you should keep an eye on when buying one. But I forgot what it was, or where the article was. So did I just misread and all surge protectors are all basically the same?
I've been looking at the (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812120401) CyberPower 850 6 Feet 8 Outlets 2400 Joules Home/Office Surge Protection which has the highest rating and is fairly cheap. My setup is 700w + monitor + clock.
Now I've heard lots of people saying to go for a UPS, but to need my power needs I'd need to shell out $200-400 and not up for that; as I said, I dont mind my PC reboot, I just dont want it to get damage when spikes/sags happen.
(and yes I did unplug the powerstrip from the wall when the thunders started rolling in).

Ironically I need to get one for my bedroom, as I already have one for the front room, anyway...
I found two links with the info you need -
* (

* (
http://blog.worshiptheglitch.com/post/1045674720/how-to-buy-a-surge-protector)
Based on a quick read of the above links it would suggest you need one with the following basic's:
* lowest clamp voltage (330v or lower)
* highest suppression value (3000 joules or more)
* 3 line protection (Protection Modes (H-N, N-G and H-G) hot-neutral, neutral-ground & hot ground)
beyond that read the inof from the links above to gauge what's best for you.
