This was a question posed to the class in my economics course today. The professor has taught in Canada, America, and New Zealand (maybe Australia too), and he said he'd asked this question every year for the past 20 or so years.
Canadians' number one response was to say they'd move to another seat. Number two was to ask him nicely to stop.
He claims that in every American class he's ever taught, the first response is always, without fail, "I'd sue him".
Maybe I've spoiled the experiement by giving away the results, but if had posed just the question, the only responses I'd get would be... well I'm gonna get those anyway :thumb:

Bullshit. I'm calling a bullshit on the "American" response. Me, I'd either move or ask the smoker to put it out. Yep, we're too litigious, but that's a load of bull's collops to imply that every American class he's ever taught responded univerally with "I'd sue." Doesn't happen. Your teacher is giving in to confabulation based on media bias.

Clearly it needs to be adapted out of respect for different cultures - in Australia the cigar should be replaced with a shrimp being burned on a barbie.
