A full alchemy set weighs more than a dozen welkynd stones which would be ample for a gate run, so it's all swings and roundabouts, really.
And which is it? 75 alchemy or 100? Apprentice or expert kit?
If you want to get picky about magicka regeneration, you don't even need potions or stones, just get a bunch of spell absorption items/spells and you can just carry on blasting regardless.

I have like hundreds of those damn Welkynd stones. Worthless to me.

Denizens of Oblivion are most vulnerable to shock. I have a special Oblivion kit I make sure and take with me. I have a special box in my Skingrad home where I keep only my Oblivion plane supplies
* Potion of Shock, Damage Health, Paralyze. About 20 of them.
* Sword of Shocking
* Bow of Shocking
* Frost damage sword (for the Fire Atronachs)
* Potion of Chameleon, or spell or enchanted item. You don't need many, But it's helpful when you're faced with more than one monster close together. Helps you take them out one by one without alerting the others.
* Potion of Shield, Restore Magicka. I hardly every use this but it makes me feel better to take it along.
Recipe: Damage Health, Paralyze, Shock Damage
- Cairn Bolete Cap
- Ectoplasm
- Milk Thistle Seeds
- Harrada or Clannfear Claws
Recipe: Restore Fatigue, Restore Magicka, Shield
- Tomato
- Flax Seeds
- Blackberry
There are tomato patches near both Skingrad and Chorrol. Blackberry too. Flax seeds are plentiful in the fields surrounding both cities as well.

I always make sure I have a few Waterwalking potions with me. There are some secret areas across the lava at times, or huge shortcuts you can take to get directly to a Sigil Tower. But then again, you don't really need it if you're a master Acrobat. But still, very useful.

Why would you ever lug around your alchemy tools unless you're roleplaying someone who doesn't want a home? Make potions at home, keep alchemy tools at home, bring potions for exploration/fighting/whatever. I had thought you could figure that out without any help.

Using 75 Alch+Apprentice set at home to make potions for your travels is superior to lugging several Welkynd Stones around. 100 Alchemy + Expert set just magnifies the inadequacy of Welkynd Stones compared to their weight.
You can bring higher quantities and more powerful potions than you can bring Welkynd Stones.

Unless you run into a bunch of Clannfear or similar non-magic using enemies. Spell Absorption does absolutely nothing there, as a mainly Atronarch player I know that all too well.

I'm an Atronach too so I used to get so excited when I found a cache of Welkynd stones. Now it's like, man, do I have to cart 20 lbs of THESE things home again? I have never ever used a single one of them. They don't even sell for that much. I must have a couple hundred at home in some chest someplace. Never used any of my Varla stones either. I carry a few soulgems around for recharging when I'm out and about, and I've amassed enough money, about 25,000 septims, that I don't care about the high prices the Mage's Guild charges me to fill them up again when I'm back in town.
I find so many Strong Potions of Restore Magicka around nowdays I ususally have to dump a load of them when I come back to cut down on weight. I usually carry only 8 and rarely use them. Even in Oblivion there are lots of recharge opportunities, including those weird eye towers that shoot fireballs at you. But then again, I'm primarily a swordsman and don't use my Magic all that much. Heavy magic users' experiences may differ.
Oh, and I like the waterwalking potion recommendation. If it's a short hop across the lava I just take the damage. But I can see that lava walking would provide some great shortcuts to get right to the action. That's such a great idea! Usually, though, I prefer to go the long way to get the loot and collect alchemy ingredients anyway. But sometimes I'm just not in the mood. I want to be done whatever Oblivion plane I'm dealing with. I'm adding them to my field kit.
I can't recommend that Shock, Damage Health, Paralyze potion enough. Since I became an Alchemy expert it's the only poison I brew up nowdays. I just reached level 16 and saw my very first Daedroth. Snuck up on him, whacked him with a poisoned shock sword, watched him drop to the ground, and the 2 seconds of paralysis was all I needed to finish him off with no pain, no mess. I made a special enchanted bow called Super Sparker. It does 30 shock damage, but only has 30 hits so I use it sparingly. That bow, plus shock poison, and maybe even one of my few and rare shocking arrows I find are enough to take down any Oblivion baddy with a single 3X stealth hit from a distance.

In all honesty, I RARELY use anything other than my main weapon, Umbra, and my shield. I beat the crap out of the monsters, then when they are low, I switch to Umbra and soul trap. This is how I keep my main weapon at full power. I use the Night Mother's healing spell during/after fights. That's about it. I can't remember the last time I used a potion.

I actually carry at least a mortar and pestle with me everywhere I go. The full set, probably not, but it's useful to be able to make use of ingredients I find along the way - primarily for upping my alchemy skill, but occasionally it's nice to be able to make potions out of what you have on hand.
Anybody actually gotten a full master set? I've only ever found 2 pieces.
As for what to bring to Oblivion, hmm. Anything that boosts acrobatics can be useful to taking shortcuts here and there, whether just by jumping over rocks or by making leaps off of intertower walkways. Bring arrows in mass if you're an archer. Lots of repair items if you aren't master of armorer.

Are you sure about the potions of water walking? I found out the hard way that "water walking" does not imply ANY liquid surface :grr:

Took me very, very very long. As of Level 42 i yesterday found the final piece, the Master Alembic. Got the Expert set relatively quick tho. And i always carry the full set around too. Needing it less and less, but exactly for those rare times i dont wanna backpedal to my houses just to brew something up.
Stuff to bring into Oblivon?
For any Non-Master Armorer, lotsa hammers. Depending on your Level/Restoration skill, Regenerate/Restore Health potions. If youre a mage, Restore Magicka potions. Some Restore Fatigue potions to keep your Bang up during long fights. Elementary Resistance items if youre very low lvl. Some spare room for daedric loot. And definitively the Paralyze spell (wish i had known how useful this wicked thing is earlier. You even can paralyze Gloom Wraiths and Nether Liches). :ebil:
