I went into my second plane yesterday evening, and I was doing reasonably well until I got into a cave which required me to levitate through a hole in the ceiling to proceed. This was annoying, because then I had to trudge all the way back to the gate to go and pick up a potion, scroll or spell.
It's all part of the game of course, but still a bit tedious when you're half way to the sigil stone and end up having to backtrack due to the lack of a small item.
So, I thought it may be useful for me, and possibly others who wander in here, to have a checklist for Oblivion Plane adventuring to ensure one is adequately prepared, without giving away too much of what is likely to be encountered. Just items or spells that will be most useful and save frustration.
Maybe I should just work it out for myself, but I have limited play time and my progress is really lagging behind. I haven't even got to level 5, for the love of the Gods.

I have yet to see anything that allows me to levitate. Where do you find scrolls or potions like that?

There aren't any levitation or flight items, AFAIK. The closest you come is fortify acrobatics. I've seen cieling holes, but never one you were actually supposed to go up and through - they were all fast return methods or the like, and you got up there a different way. I've seen that several times.

Right. I may have been less than observant in the neighbouring tower. There may have been a portal in there, due to the word "portal" being in the name of the area.
Well, any thoughts on actually existing items to take along?

Welkynd stones if you're a magic user, repair hammers if you're a fighter and/or a couple of hundred arrows if you're using a bow. Goes without saying you should have some healing potions on you too.

About all I take are various potions (at least 10-15 healing potions, shield and fire resist potions are also handy) and poisons and 25 repair hammers. Of course I also have Restoration for post combat healing so the potions only get used in emergencies.

Im the same. Just so long as I've got a claymore, bow, bout 50 arrows (for emergencies) and longsword with shield, I'm usually okay, seeing as I trained a bit in restoration and bought a good heal spell. But dont dismiss the first heal spell you get in the game, its cheap to use and can restore a fair bit of health, if you use it enough. Of course, the blood wells are useful. But I usually keep inventory space free for loot.

Welkynd stones if you're a magic user,
Unless you're an alchemist. At 100 Alchemy, with a full expert set, I can make 20 Magicka/65 seconds potions with 0.1 weight. A Welkynd Stone has a weight of 1 and only gives 1 shot of max Magicka, that's usually less than 1300 Magicka (unless you exploit the game with Weakness spells). I can run myself completely dry then drink 1 potion and keep blasting for a long time, with a Welkynd Stone I'd run out again sooner.

Of course, it will be different for each player. For example, if you have mastered Armourer, you'll only need to take one hammer. I was just genrealising for brevity.

And most non-Atronarchs will have at most 300-350 Max Magicka, you can make 0.1 weight potions that restore that much around 75 Alchemy using an Apprentice set of tools.
Welkynd Stones are ok for the dungeon/trip you find them on, or for skill training at home. They just weigh too much to carry around when compared to decent homebrewed Magicka potions. Mages generally have low Strength so your carrying capacity is something you should take into account, especially since Alchemy is an almost universal skill among Mages.
