Super Mario Odyssey. - by Renzatic

Here's 17 minutes of Breath of the Wild running on the Switch. I think this is the first time since Windwaker that I've been well and truly stoked for a Zelda game.
It really does look like Zelda Skyrim. You have a wide open world, allegedly 140 square miles in size, complete with multiple sets of armor, weapons, and all other kinds of stuff you can mix and match. It's also completely nonlinear, since they wanted to capture the spirit of the original Zelda from the late 80's by starting you in a wide open world with nothing but the clothes on your back, and a vague direction on where to head starting out.
With this, Xenoblade 2, Mario, the new SMT, Mario Kart, and a few other interesting looking games, I see no reason why I shouldn't buy a Switch. Having all these console class games in a portable machine? Why not?

...I can't get excited about the 3-D platformers, but the only thing I've ever enjoyed from that genre is Psychonauts and that's obviously not because of the platforming.
Shame, since most of the 3D Mario platformers are gold, imvho. <3
Can't wait for this one, though I wasn't overly impressed with the city bit, tbh.

Super Mario Sunshine which I've played a bit of is excellent. Bad camera, but still a great game.

Mario Sunshine is an underrated gem. It maybe wasn't as visually inventive as the Galaxy games that came after, but I actually prefer Sunshine's manual camera.. Galaxy's camera made the game feel a lot more on rails than it should have.
And yeah, everyone owes it to themselves to at least try Super Mario World and one of the 3D Marios too. That's required reading for serious gamers.

I rank Mario64 up there with the greats, but for some reason, I could never get into Sunshine.
Dunno what it was about it that put me off. Maybe it's the lack of variety in the environments, or that they gimped some of Mario's best moves from 64 to shoehorn FLUDD in, but for some reason, it never quite grabbed.
This is why I have such high hopes for Odyssey. It looks like Nintendo's finally playing to the strengths of a game they've all but ignored for 20 years now.

I played through Mario 64 on an emulator. It was the game that taught me how important it is that the basic movement-mechanics of a game(platforming games in particular) are fun. Mario could do bigger and bigger jumps if you timed the next button press just right on each landing. If you turned around quickly and pressed the jump button he'd do an awesome sideways cartwheel jump, that let you reach greater heights than a regular jump. And probably best of all was that you could dive onto a downward slope and Mario would slide on his belly all the way down. Simply moving from one end of a level to the other was fun enough on it's own, even without enemies and obstacles. If you're making a game and you can pull that off, you're halfway to something great already.

I don't like Mario (the mascot) in and of himself, but I've played enough Mario games by now to be quite fond of the little bugger, because it's just so much fun to navigate him through the games' levels. I had a great time with Super Mario World and Super Mario Galaxy, and while I haven't played all that much of it, Super Mario World 3D continued the trend. By comparison, I've played some of Sonic, but it never clicked; I never actually enjoyed the moment-to-moment gameplay, feeling that I was way too clumsy and not really in control enough. Platforming isn't my favourite type of gameplay, but if I had to mention a bunch of platformers I enjoyed, the Mario titles would be at the very top of that list, even though I never played the games when they came out originally (apart from half an hour of Super Mario Land on the Gameboy) and only got around to playing any of them in earnest in the last 10 years or so.

Sunshine was the best Mario, huge and a little unwieldy perhaps, but its overall scope was amazing.

Dunno about it being the best Mario, but at the time it certainly tried to be different.
Breakthrough game will always be SM64 for me.
As for the 2D Mario games, anyone ever played the Wario spinoffs? Man, those were fun!
:)

Super Mario Galaxy never clicked for me. It felt entirely devoid of challenge for the 10 or so hours I put into it. Yoshi's Island wasn't exactly hard either, but I had way more fun with it and still felt consistently challenged.
My favorite 3D platformer is Croc 1 though (followed by Spyro 1) so take my opinion with a grain of salt :p
