That looks awesome. At the start I was thinking "oh my god, they've finally done a GTA Mario".

And that video is exactly what I was thinking of (as I've seen that video many times).

I've never really understood the appeal of Mario Brothers. I guess it probably has something to do with having owned a Megadrive instead of a Nintendo, but even after playing a number of them (but never finishing a single one) on friends consoles I didn't find them any more compelling than other platformers games. Is it a nostalgia thing or am I missing something?

They're simply really well-made platformers. Though the only ones I've played substantially is 1,3,64, Super Mario Land 1-3(on GameBoy).
Here's a Game Maker's Toolkit video dissecting what makes these games, and Nintendo's overall approach to game design, so good:

And Mario had better cross-market appeal compared to Sonic.

Also the (
https://www.amazon.com/Game-Feel-Designers-Sensation-Kaufmann/dp/0123743281) Game Feel goes into depth analyzing the evolution of movement in Mario games and its just inspiring how much thought went into the design. Did you know the original mario on the NES had a "hacked" jump that always resulted in the same downward arch regardless of jump height, and then tripled gravity on the way down? just to get the rewarding feeling of controlling him.
I've never been a huge Mario fan either, but reading that (plus the video) made me appreciate the franchise and the care put into it.

There have been some great Mario games. Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Super Mario 1, Super Mario 2 (both versions) Super Mario 3, Super Mario World, Yoshii's Island, the SMB RPG, the Paper Mario games, the New SMB games, etc. Wrecking Crew was hot garbage, and I can't get excited about the 3-D platformers, but the only thing I've ever enjoyed from that genre is Psychonauts and that's obviously not because of the platforming.

Super Mario Kart was an excellent game also.
